Dear Members and Friends,
We have two very important events coming up at the end of this week. We really need your participation. Below are the details for Thursday’s “Out Migration” with Alexandra Morton and Saturday night’s Todd Butler “Save Our Estuary” Concert.
Event #1: Out Migration
On Thursday, April 29th, The Migration will leave Black Creek at 9 AM and plans to arrive at the Sports Center Arena #2 parking lot off Vanier Dr. and Headquarters Rd. by 2:30PM. Comox Valley residents are welcome to gather and join her there between 2:30 and 3PM. Between 3:15 and 3:30, the entire group will ‘migrate’ – walk, bike, skateboard – over to Simms Park by 4PM.
Supporters from the community who are not coming from the Sports Center Arena can meet at Simms Park. There will be music in the band shell for Alexandra’s arrival and after being welcomed to the Comox Valley, she will give a brief overview and update of the Migration.
Between 4:30 and 5:00, the community will leave Simms Park to walk, kayak, canoe, or cycle over to the K’omoks Native Band Hall along Dyke Rd (Comox Ave) with a planned arrival at 5:45PM. There will be a native greeting ceremony with Andy Everson and dancers to welcome Alexandra. A WILD salmon burger dinner and refreshments will be available for $6.00.
We are planning to meet her at Area #2 of the Sport Centre, around 2:30 p.m. and walk with her for the rest of the afternoon. We will have a sign saying “Sierra Club B.C Welcomes Alexandra Morton” and we will join the walk carrying our banner and our “No Gas on the Dyke” signs. It is important that we have a good turnout for the event to support Alexandra and to show the flag to our local community. As you know, the proposed gas station is a serious threat to migrating salmon. The event will be covered by the local media. Last Friday four of us were waving our banner and signs on the 17th Street Bridge during evening rush hour. I don’t know how many vehicles passed us but it was in the hundreds. Many folks beeped their horns or gave us the “thumbs up” sign—and most of the folks were young, the audience we’ve been trying to attract. Making ourselves much more visible is undoubtedly the most effective way to keep our presence in front of the community and, needless to say, it will also to assist us with our fundraising. So if you can make it, please turn out for this event. You should contact David or Adele Rutledge (250-336-2130) to let them know how many signs we will need, or make your own signs, just show up. (As Woody Allen once said, “80% of success is just showing up). If you can’t make it for the walk, show up a little later at Simms Park or at the Native Band Hall.
Event #2: The Todd Butler “Save Our Estuary” Concert. This is our largest fundraising event to date and some of our members and friends have spent many hours organizing the event. We really need your participation. Please purchase a ticket. And if you can’t attend, consider purchasing a ticket anyway and we will give it to someone who can’t afford a ticket.
This event will be held at the Florence Filberg Centre on May 1st; doors at 7 pm, show 8-10. Tickets are $25, which includes admission and snacks; there will be a cash bar, as well. Tickets can be bought at The Laughing Oyster Bookstore in Courtenay, Videos and More in Comox or by calling 250-339-1331. All proceeds go to the “Save Our Estuary” Legal Fund.
Thanks
Mike Bell
