If you do not want to backup all iPhone contents to iCloud, you can choose to backup contacts only by syncing to iCloud. Once you have turned on the Contacts Sync option, all your iPhone contacts will be backed up to iCloud server. In addition, all the contacts stored on other Apple devices that logged in the same Apple ID will also be merged to iCloud.

Regardless of the iPhone model, after force rebooting the iPhone and the iPhone turning back on again, relaunch the Phone app and the Messages app, and the contacts information should be restored and visible again with contacts names and other info and details.

I tried figuring out what happened to all my contacts for 4 months straight. Went from 1200 to 116 over night. I tried everything from ICloud sync to changing regions and all.
To no avail, I finally figured out that I had to download the Google contacts sync app. Once I did and paid the $2 fee, it brought back all my contacts from the past years. Hope this helps someone.

When the iCloud is able to access to contacts, the contacts will automatically synchronizes with other devices. That means if someone who use the same Apple ID accidentally deleted contacts on his iPhone, your contacts will be deleted synchronously, too.

When you sync your contacts to iCloud, you'll be able to access them anywhere, regardless of whether you're using your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or even a Windows computer. All of your contacts will be stored on the cloud so that you have access to them anywhere you can sign in.

Any sync or backup activity requires a stable internet connection. You might be using mobile data while traveling to the office or another meeting. So, using mobile data on the move might not successfully sync contacts properly.

Instead, we recommend that whenever you connect your iPhone to a stable Wi-Fi network, ensure that the iCloud sync takes place for contacts and other data on your iPhone. We recommend you to open iCloud.com in a browser and compare the synced iPhone contacts once in a while.

If you own multiple devices like iPad, Mac, or a different iPhone, you can save contacts on them that will sync automatically to all your devices via iCloud. The same will happen if you use Gmail as your contacts account on the iPhone. But for successful sync, your devices must be connected to the internet.

2. Turn off the switch for Contacts. It will ask if you wish to keep the previously synced contacts on your iPhone or delete them. Choose Delete from My iPhone (it will re-sync in the subsequent step).

3. Give it a few seconds and after that, tap the Contacts switch to turn it on again. Make sure your iPhone has working Wi-Fi or mobile data. In a minute, all contacts will re-sync and show up in the Contacts app.

As stated previously, iPhone does not limit you to storing and syncing contacts only in iCloud. You can use your Google, Microsoft, or other accounts as well. If you were using an Android phone earlier, all your contacts are probably stored in your Google account. You can have all those contacts appear on your iPhone by following the steps below.

You can also force messages to resync on both old and new iPhones. Open Settings > tap your name > iCloud > switch messages off > reboot your device > turn Messages on in iCloud again.

In the modern era of apps, contacts are not limited to the contacts app only. If you are trying to save contacts with the Contacts app but interference from another contacts-related app (like iMessage) can cause the issue. In such a case, force closing all other contacts apps and then saving the contacts may solve the problem.

If that resolves the issue but the user wants to keep contacts from another account (like Gmail), then using a 3rd party app (like Contact Sync) to sync the contacts between iCloud and other accounts may solve the problem.

If there are multiple accounts configured to save the contacts, then that can lead to the current contacts catastrophe. In such a case, disabling the syncing of contacts to other accounts may solve the problem.

One of the best features of the Safari browser is that website tabs and your data sync with all your devices. But sometimes, you might face problems with your Safari syncing tabs with other devices. To fix this problem, you can try disabling and enabling Safari sync and force Safari sync to iCloud on your iOS or Mac device.

If you have signed into iCloud on your devices, you will also have had the option to synchronize your contacts across all of your hardware. Naturally, any changes you make to the contact list on one device affects all others.

If you want to delete one or a few contacts that you no longer need, you can do that for each individual contact. If you have iCloud syncing enabled, deleting a contact on one device will delete it from others.
