On the happy occassion of Id-Ul-Fitr, I share with you a very moving
short story written by one of India's greatest writers - Munshi Premchand.
Idgah is about the experiences of a small boy Hamid who gets 3 pice for
buying things for himself on this day of celebrations. Hamid's friends
get much more money from their homes and they go together to the fair.
What does Hamid do? How does Hamid (and children) experience the various
events and activities in the adult world in the fair.
The original is in Hindi and one should learn Hindi just to read this
story :-) and the hundreds others written by Premchand
I am sharing a translation by Khushwant Singh a well known Indian writer
in english... it tries to be faithful to the original... Is there a
translation into Kannada?
regards,
Guru
