Dear teachers and teacher educators,

Many of you have registered for the  "Course on OER": MOOC on NROER, which is the first offering of its kind in India..... this is a 4 week programme to learn about OERs.  (you can access the course on http://courses.metastudio.org/courses/NCERTX/OE-101/2014_T1/info, with your login)

I was 'course mentor' for week 2 where we discussed 'copyright' (and Ranjani is the course mentor for week 4, which begins tomorrow). I hope you have been able to go through the videos, readings on the course and also participate in the course discussions. (My introductory video on 'copyright' is on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nP0KmCNzLY8)

I did a posting today on a discussion on  - "FOSS and OER Redefining Education" thread, and said   "in the industry, for quite sometime, the idea of 'BYOD' (Bring your own device) has taken root ... where instead of using the laptop/computer supplied by the employer (which will tend to conform to internal norms/policies), employees are bringing their own gadgets, which sometimes are more sophisticated/handy than that supplied by their employers. Yes this is an important move ... from institutional to individual devices.

In Karnataka, we work with government school teachers, and for few years now we have been emphasising to teachers that the Government has focused on supplying computers to schools for students but ignored teachers. Teachers need to buy their own personal computers from their own funds (like they have done for mobiles etc), since it will help them greatly in their development. of course I do think education departments are foolish to supply laptops to students (like few Indian state govt have done), while ignoring teachers and I would like to share what Prof MM Pant (retd Pro VC IGNOU) says - we need to have a 'no teacher left behind' policy to ensure they are all integrated into the digital world. However, instead of waiting for that, teachers should simply buy their devices... and for govt school teachers, this may not be a very difficult proposition!!"
End posting.

Hope all teachers in Karnataka will acquire their personal devices to participate in the digital world/ 'information society' and broaden and deepen their own professional capacities and capabilities!!

regards,
Guru
