A year back, IT for Change was "e-introduced" by Prakash Advani, who heads Canonical India (the company that makes the Ubuntu Sarvajanika Operating system), to Mr Kris Gopalakrishna, the then CEO of Infosys. I requested Mr Gopalakrishnan (through email) to donate de-bonded computers to Government High Schools in Karnataka and mentioned that the STF programme was encouraging our teachers to learn ICTs and try to use ICT for their professional development and for teaching-learning. Mr. Gopalakrishnan kindly accepted our request and last year, we made request for around 15 GHS in Yadgir (for our work with Kalike - see http://www.itforchange.net/ITfC_Annual_Report_2013-14/index.php/Education#Kalike) to get computers and Infosys sent between 5-10 computers to each school. These we found were in good working condition. During this year, 2014-15, we have requested and got computers for around 10 of our GHS In Bangalore South 3 Block (for our work in TCOL, see http://www.itforchange.net/ITfC_Annual_Report_2013-14/index.php/Education#Teachers_Communities_of_Learning_.28TCoL.29)
In the same way any interested BEO/HM can write to Infoys - see http://karnatakaeducation.org.in/KOER/en/index.php/Integrating_ICT_in_my_school for the procedure and application forms and get a donation of 5-10 computers. Of course Infosys expects that the school will make every effort to use the computers (ensuring electricity, Internet etc - these can be covered from RMSA school grant also) for teachers and students. We can approach other companies and institutions also to donate new/used computers so that we can increase schools with working ICT Labs across the state. It will be easier for Infosys if few schools in one cluster can request, so that they can transport a truck load at a time. Please add to the page with your ideas also.
I will also like to thank Prakash and Rekha/Infosys for this opportunity to equip our schools with working computers.
