Week 10: Angels' Prayers
This worldly
life is filled with trials and tribulations. And of these trials
which Allah has decreed for us is illness.
For a believer,
even becoming ill is a good thing. Through His infinite mercy, this is
one of the ways in which Allah forgives the sins of His servants.
But
what do we do when our brother or sister in Islam gets sick? A Muslim
should visit his fellow Muslim in
the time of an illness. As we will
see from the ahadith, it is one of the rights that a Muslim has over
another Muslim.
Unfortunately today, this is not widely practiced
amongst us. We hear about this brother being sick, or
about that
sister being sick, but do we really do our best to visit him
or her?
I hope the following ahadith will encourage us to revive this
praiseworthy sunnah, insha Allah.
From the Ahadith:
1.
`Ali bin Abu Talib (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying, "When
a Muslim visits
a sick Muslim at dawn, seventy thousand angels keep on
praying for him till dusk. If he visits him in the evening, seventy
thousand
angels keep on praying for him till the morning; and he will
have (his share of) reaped fruits in Jannah.''
[At-Tirmidhi]
2.
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Every
Muslim has five rights over
another Muslim (i.e., he has to perform
five duties for another Muslim): to return the greetings, to visit the
sick, to accompany
funeral processions, to accept an invitation, to
respond to the sneezer [i.e., to say: `Yarhamuk-Allah (may Allah bestow
His Mercy
on you),' when the sneezer praises Allah].''
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
3.
Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, "Visit the sick, feed the hungry, and
(arrange for the) release of the captive.''
[Al-Bukhari]
This
sunnah was nominated by a sister.
May Allah reward her and all of those
who take part in reviving the sunnah of the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi
wa sallam).
Week 11: Cover Up!
“Ohhhh my God! Did you hear what Sr. Fatima did?!”
“Dang bro, did you hear what Br. Salman did?!”
How quickly we run to others and tell what our brother/sister in Islam did. Do we forget that we are humans, and
hence fall into sin sometimes?
How would we feel if others spread our sins to everyone?
What
did the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) advise us to do if and
when we are exposed to a sin of our dear brother/sister
in Islam? Should we go around gossipping or should we remain silent and keep it to ourselves?
Let’s take a look.
From the Ahadith:
Ibn `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,
"A Muslim is a brother of (another) Muslim,
he neither wrongs him nor
does hand him over to one who does him wrong. If anyone fulfills his
brother's needs, Allah will fulfill his
needs; if one relieves a Muslim
of his troubles, Allah will relieve his troubles on the Day of
Resurrection; and if anyone covers up a
Muslim (his sins), Allah will
cover him up (his sins) on the Resurrection Day."
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
While
there are many different aspects and lessons we could extract from this
Hadith, here we will only focus on the aspect of “covering up
your
brother’s/sister’s sins.”
In the Hadith, the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa
sallam) gives us practical advice about what we can
do in this life in order to receive the great gift of
having our sins covered up on that terrifying Day.
Not
only are we upholding the welfare of our communities by covering each
other’s mistakes, but we are also promised that Allah will
cover up our
sins and mistakes on the Day of Judgement. It’s a win-win situation IF we follow the advice of the Prophet
(sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam).
Therefore, let us waste no time in implementing
these beautiful words of advice from the Prophet
(sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam).
Praise be to Allah and may the blessings be upon His Final Messenger Muhammad (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam).
And Allah knows best.
