Warm greetings after a long hiatus. Been a bit tied up, what with the
global finincial meltdown and all.
Here's a new piece of delectible aircheck history for Progressive
Radio fans to enjoy. This is Side A of a cassette someone mailed to
Tim Warden who hosts the KWFM tribute site at
http://las-solanas.com/kwfm/.
Be sure to visit, tons of worthwhile content and links.
Quoting my email to Tim:
> Tim - Here's a (somewhat) restored rendition of the lo-fi cassette that guy sent you. Amazing to hear fresh Mark Young, who sounds so good even when he has nothing to say...

Mark Young, whose given name was Ronald Allan Yantz, of Jericho,
Vermont (ARS callsign W1AZN), was a founder and program director of
the station. In those heady and creative days, Artistic Director would
have been an apt title. He was also my radio mentor and inspiration
circa 1968 in Burlington, Vermont, when he was at WDOT, 1400 AM and I
was a 13-year-old neophyte. His 'Collage' and 'Rock Revolution' shows
there really pushed the envelope, and must have been very challenging
for the owner, Bill Hunter. But WDOT was winning the ratings game
against WJOY, which of course was what mattered to the business.
Tim Warden just recently mentioned that he has been told that Mark
Young was The Voice of a Kennedy presidential campaign. I don't
remember Mark telling me this, and am not sure if it was allegedly the
JFK or RFK runs for President (I would imagine the latter, since MY
would have been only 19 in 1960). I have done some sleuthing on the
net but so far, no evidence has turned up.
Mark was also a libertine, and chronic overindulgence leading to liver
failure brought his life tragically to an end here in Tucson in 1975
at the age of 34. So he has been gone as long as he was here. Selah.
Side B of that tape will follow in the near future, so watch for that.
By the way, if you are not aware, Tim also hosts ARSA — THE AIRHEADS
RADIO SURVEY ARCHIVE, another goldmine for old geezers who love radio.
