Hello Educators and Activists,
We are pleased to announce that the Summer 2012 edition of Voices in Urban Education (VUE), a quarterly journal published by the Annenberg Institute for School Reform, focuses on the meaning and impact of education for liberation, featuring a collection of articles by Free Minds, Free People presenters and participants.
Despite increased national focus on closing achievement gaps, teacher effectiveness, and standards-based reform, little attention has been paid to the fundamental question: To what end are we engaged in education reform? In the latest issue of VUE, teachers, students, activists and scholars focus on the crucial ways that education serves as the foundation of a democratic, equitable society and what it means to engage in education for liberation. This issue was produced in partnership with the Education for Liberation Network.
Summer 2012 VUE authors include: Charles Payne on the research basis for education for liberation, Adeola Oredola and youth members of Youth in Action on the liberatory power of youth organizing, Bree Picower on Occupy the Department of Education, Curtis Acosta and student Asiya Mir on the banned Mexican American Studies Program in Tucson, Bryant Muldrew on the National Student Bill of Rights, Vincent Harding and immigrant activist Antonio Albizures on bridging the generational divide and Matt Bradley, Flor Olivio and Caitlin Cahill on Salt Lake City as the host city for FMFP 2013.
