What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxYouth@BFS, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxYouth@BFS event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
*Please note: Tickets are on sale now, prices are $85 each, $45 for students, and includes a full day of talks, catered lunch and break sessions, and all performances. There are only 100 seats available, if tickets sell out, please add your name to the waitlist.

Brooklyn Free School will be hosting TEDxYouth@BFS, a full-day event, on Saturday, September 22nd, 2012, from 8 am to 4 pm, at Roulette, 509 Atlantic Avenue, in Downtown Brooklyn, NY.
TEDxYouth@BFS brings together inspiring speakers and performers, in the spirit of TED, to explore some of alternative education’s more compelling ideas, including:
- learning and the brain
- addressing bullying in the classroom
- organizing better learning environments
- educational needs in a changing world
- and much more!
The theme of this event is Freedom & Democracy: Education for Change and features many exciting innovators in education, including:
- Seth Godin, author of the most popular e-book ever published, Unleashing the Ideavirus, and Stop Stealing Dreams, an e-book on the purpose of education;
- Chris Mercogliano, former director and teacher for 35 years at the Albany Free School and author of Teaching the Restless, One School’s Remarkable No-Ritalin Approach to Helping Children Learn and Succeed and How to Grow a School: Starting and Sustaining Schools That Work;
- Sam Chaltain is a DC-based writer and education activist, contributor to CNN and the Huffington Post and author ofOur School: Searching for Community in the Era of Choice;

Zoe Weil, cofounder and president of the Institute for Humane Education;
- Luke Geissbühler, cinematographer, and his son Max, founders of the Brooklyn Space Program;
- Jerry Mintz, a leading voice in the alternative school movement for over 30 years and founder of several alternative schools;
- Dena Simmons, activist, educator, and student, a Fulbright grant winner and a 2004 Harry S. Truman Scholar whose research focuses on teacher preparedness as it relates to bullying in the school setting;
- Trade School, a self-organized learning model that runs on barter;
- Scott Nine, executive director of the Institute for Democratic Education in America (IDEA), a dynamic public speaker and organizer focusing on leadership, social justice, community, educational reform, environmental sanity, and entrepreneurship;
- Nikhil Goyal, author of One Size Does Not Fit All: A Student's Assessment of School, a 17-year-old high school student who is leading a movement to transform the American school system.
TEDxYouth@BFS will also feature performances from current and former Brooklyn Free School and Manhattan Free School students. |
