You can tell if your handheld has been recognized by LeapFrog Connect because the screen on the Leapster Explorer showing the handheld connected to the computer will have sparkles moving up and down the picture of the USB cable.

LeapFrog Connect is a software that allows you, the parent, to use your computer to engage in several important features of your childs connected LeapFrog devices. You can add or remove files on the device; view and collect rewards that your child earned during gameplay; and access valuable parent features. LeapFrog Connect works with the online LeapFrog Learning Path, which is custom tailored to shape and inspire your childs unique learning journey. LeapFrog devices that use LeapFrog Connect include Tag Reader, Leapster2 handheld, Didj handheld and Crammer handheld. Each of these products has specific software which must be installed on your computer.

If your home network is using a hidden SSID (SSID is the broadcast name of the Wi-Fi router), it will not appear on your LeapPad. Follow the instructions that came with your wireless router to make your network visible.

If the above does not resolve your issues, there may be another problem with your wireless network. Check to see that other devices that use the wireless network are able to connect properly, for example, navigate to a webpage on your computer using the wireless network. To troubleshoot these issues, please refer to your ISP or network provider.

Recently we were invited to a LeapFrog event, giving the kids a chance to play with some of their new products. My kids could hardly contain themselves when we entered the room. The room was set-up in three areas: the infant and preschool toys, Tag reading tools, and the new Leapster Explorer.

The four learning options are accessible by an easily moveable slider at the top and each option is indicated by an image; no reading required. There is a power off on the slider but like most LeapFrog items, it will turn off on its own if your child walks away and forgets about it.

Each activity is guides by a voice giving them instructions to follow the flashing dots on tablet. The dots move, illustrating the steps the child has to take whether drawing a shape or a letter. And Scout is always there (in voice) to encourage and cheer the kids at each step.

With Shapes kids learn to draw basic shapes like lines and circles and then move into complicated zigzags. The shapes are based on moves kids will need when drawing letters. My three-year-old loves doing the shapes. Some she already knows how to draw and some are new. This tracing activity also helps reinforce shape recognition.

We discovered you can also use the Tag pen to read the Tag Junior books. This is great news if you already have a Tag Junior for either a younger child or your child is transitioning up to the Tag. You will need to download the audio from the Tag Junior books onto the pen. (On the audio download page, look for the Tag Junior picture on the bottom of the page). Keep in mind that the Tag will read the Tag Junior books the same way the Tag Junior reads them, as a whole page, not word by word. The Tag Junior however cannot read the Tag books.

But the Leapfrog Tag Reading System offers great learning and fun beyond just reading the story or having it read to you. Kids can use the pen to explore the page; touch elements or people in the story to hear dialog or sounds beyond the story. My son loved finding these hidden gems. He felt more involved in the story, choosing what to discover. There are also games and quizzes in the story. Your child can choose to play along or not by selecting the appropriate icon at the bottom of the page.

You can store a number of books on the Tag pen so switching from story to story is easy; just touch the page of the new story and the Tag pen finds the right audio clip. The interactivity of the Tag keeps the stories from becoming too repetitive and boring. Now my son loves to read along with the story. The Tag also gives my son time to explore and learn on his own, without any mom, dad or big sister looking over his shoulder.

Connecting online also enables you do download the audio for other Tag or Tag Junior books you own. Plus as your child completes sections of the book they will receive a reward, like a door hanger or maze you can printout. My son was always asking me to connect to the computer to discover what new reward he revealed. Using certain Tag books can also unlock online games for your kids to enjoy.

I was taken totally out of my comfort zone when I was in London at the Cybermummy Conference on the 26th June. Mixing with a HUGE group of women, none of whom I had ever met before had my stomach growling with the nerves that were threatening to overtake my bold statement at booking myself in for the conference in the first place.

The back of the leapster holds the 4 AA batteries, and the screw is so large that a regular sized knife will open it easily. I suspect a 5p coin would also do the trick, so no need to carry around a screwdriver just in case of that all important battery run out, just when you need it to keep a youngster occupied.

To get the best use out of it, the Leapster Explorer needs to be connected to the LeapFrog Connect application which you get on disk, or can download it for the leaplets (little apps and games ) directly from their website (here).

To download a leaplet, there is a starter code with the leapster when you unbox it, and linking up via the computer is actually very simple to do. To buy more download codes, you have to go to specific outlets and have them sent to you, or buy from some toy shops.

One of the things that he is usually very jealous of is that his older brother can take photographs on his phone. He is never trusted with a camera alone, as sadly things just seem to fall apart in his hands, and we all end up devastated.

The camera fits into the bottom slot of the leapster. It was surprisingly easy to sort out. It just takes a second to click it into place, then connect to the store through LeapFrog Connect, and download the software for it to work.

Certain settings on your computer's antivirus software may prevent the transfer of data between the LeapFrog toy and LeapFrog Connect 1. For example, if you have McAfee Internet Security, open this application by clicking on the McAfee icon at the bottom of your computer screen. Check firewall settings to ensure LeapFrog Connect Application hasn't been blocked 1. If it has, change the firewall access permissions to allow the application ro connect to the Internet.

The LeapFrog toy must have power to launch LeapFrog Connect 1. If the toy doesn't power on, replace the batteries and try turning on the toy again. If after correctly changing the batteries the toy still doesn't turn on, contact LeapFrog's customer support for service and repair information.

LeapFrog Connect may ask for permission to install critical updates or upgrades that might include new games and rewards 1. The update notification instructs parents to download the Connect application again 1. Click the OK button when prompted to begin the process, which can take up to 10 minutes to complete.

The popular maker of educational toys and learning tools has delivered a digital handheld platform for youngsters 4 to 9, with games and activities that cover everything from art and music to geography and math.

You or your child can add content in several ways. First are game cartridges that slip into a slot at the top of the unit. But you can also connect Leapster via USB to a PC or Mac and download learning apps - called Leaplets - from an online store. Leaplets are available as e-books (for example, to teach short vowel words), videos (for counting), game apps or flash cards (Spanish).

There are left/right buttons on the shoulders of the device, along with a directional pad and buttons that straddle a 3.2-inch touch display. Kids can use their fingers or a stylus that is connected by string to make things happen.

The green and white plastic device, which also comes in pink, is mercifully durable, given how my kids knocked it around. The battery cover was jarred loose a couple of times, but no damage was done. Leapster runs on four AA batteries that I had to replace after about four days of fairly heavy use. A charger is optional.

By connecting Leapster to the PC, kids can enter an online virtual playground called LeapWorld. This proved frustrating, because connecting and online navigation were exceedingly slow. LeapWorld activities include Weather Town, where kids can learn meteorology, and Ocean Rescue, where they discover recycling.

Right when he thought playtime was over, Carthy recalled that the tablet had an application that resembles a web browser. This web browser consisted of a single page that delivers video and gaming content via a remote server.
