Dear PhD students
Next week, 25 March, we will start a 7.5-credit course entitled Computational Syntax,
http://www.cse.chalmers.se/~aarne/computationalsyntax/
which is about natural language processing (parsing, semantics, translation) in GF, Grammatical Framework.
http://www.grammaticalframework.org/
The course does not require prior knowledge of GF or linguistics; in fact, it can serve as a first introduction to linguistic concepts for those who have their background in programming. In the past, many students have found it particularly interesting to look at their own language from the GF perspective and go through the demanding but rewarding process of implementing its grammar. At present, many of these grammars are scaling up to full-scale translation systems, which poses new challenges for efficiency and robustness, as well as combining grammars with statistical methods.
The course belongs to GU's Masters programme in Language Technology. But CSE students are also invited, on both Masters and PhD levels. For the latter, there is a possibility for taking as a course project something that relates to their research, with a potential for a publication if some novel ways of combining grammars with other things are found. Some relevant areas are
- algorithms
- machine learning
- information retrieval
- artificial intelligence
- logic
- formal methods
- software engineering
If you want more details, don't hesitate to ask us!
It would also be useful if you dropped a mail to Aarne if you plan to attend. But no other registration is needed for PhD students at this point.
With best regards
Aarne, lecturer
