Brother Printer Firmware

Whiletrying to update my brother printer (DCP-8080DN) firmware, the java program asks for a admin password, and says that it could only have been altered by a BRadmin program, otherwise the default would be "access".

I spent many hours doing a variety of factory resets and trying the password above, "access". Apparently, Brother pushed out a firmware update recently which changed the default password on many devices to "initpass". So, if you are locked out of the web interface give this a try.

- Updating the firmware will delete some data from your Brother machine such as secured print data, caller ID log, journal report, outgoing message, and more (features depend on your model machine). We recommend that you read the installation notes on the download page before running the firmware update tool.

a. Double-click the installer package icon FirmwareUpdateTool.pkg or BrMainXXXX.dmg.

b. Follow the onscreen instructions to run the firmware update tool.

c. If prompted to enter your password, enter your Mac password and click Install Software.

If you don't know your system password, contact Apple or your network administrator for help.

d. Click FirmwareUpdater.jar.

If you receive a message stating: To use the "java -jar FirmwareUpdater.jar" command-line tool you need to install JDK, visit to download the Java SE Development Kit.

e. Select your language and click Continue.

f. Select the way your machine is connected to the Internet (Connect Directly is most common) and click Continue. Go to step 5.

a. Make sure that your computer is connected to your network.

b. Make sure your anti-virus software and firewall software are temporarily disabled.

c. If your machine is connected using a network connection, and steps a and b don't resolve the issue, switch your machine to a USB connection and try the update again.

d. Macintosh users - You may need to use a different version of Java. Click here for instructions.

a. Make sure that the Brother machine is turned on and do one of the following:

- USB users - Make sure the USB cable is directly connected to your machine and your computer.

The firmware cannot be updated if you're printing using printer sharing and the Brother machine is connected to a different computer.

- Wired Network users (for supported models) - Make sure the network cable is connected to the machine and the router.

- Wireless Network users (for supported models) - Make sure that your computer is connected to the same wireless network as the machine.

b. You may need to temporarily disable the anti-virus software and firewall software.

Your machine's default password may be one of the following based on manufacture date:

- initpass

- access

- Some machines will have it listed on the back next to "PWD".

Not all machines will have a password label. Try one of the other possible default passwords.

If you've created a custom password for your Brother machine's settings, and you've forgotten the password, you'll need to reset the network card to factory default to regain access to these settings. We cannot help you recover a lost password.

Secondly, the firmware update cannot be completed if you are printing using printer sharing and the Brother machine you wish to update is connected to a computer other than the one on which you are accessing the Firmware Update tool.

The firmware update process for Brother printers and scanners may take up to 15 minutes, but can often be completed in less time if there are no complications. Once the process starts it is important that you do not restart or turn off your computer until the process completes.

b. If you are connected via USB, make sure that the USB cable is connected to both your machine and your computer

For wired network users, ensure the network cable is connected to the machine and the access point

Wireless Network users should check that the computer is successfully connected to the wireless network

Firmware is the software that is required to make all hardware function. Manufacturers endeavour to release regular updates to keep devices performing at their most efficient, fix any bugs and to guard against security threats.

8. Select the way your machine is connected to the Internet (probably Connect Directly) and click Continue.

Unplug the USB cable from the printer to the PC and check to make sure there are no documents stuck in the printer queue. After unzipping the file open the GT Garment Printer Uninstall Tool folder and double click on the BrRemPnP.exe (the only icon in color) executable file to run the tool. This tool is for Windows operating system computers only.

Update to firmware 3.9 on your GTX (GTX-422) printer before installing this printer driver. The reason being is if the PC already has the 3.9 printer driver installed first, the new printer driver will downgrade automatically once connected. This firmware CAN ONLY BE LOADED on a GTX (GTX-422) and NOT a GTXpro (GTX-423)

I received an email from Brother printers telling me I need to update my firmware. I asked them why. They said "The firmware update is to prevent the Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability, which can allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the url parameter to etc/loginerror.html." My first question for the forum is what they mentioned a vulnerability for Macs?

"Safe" connotes a wide variety of topics. Java has been, and will always be, a potential vector for malware intrusion, and if you don't need to install it you're better off without it. Regarding your second question, due to some of the applications that I run on my machines, I update to the latest version of Oracle's JDK whenever one is released. Currently, it stands at version 11.0.2. I have had no problems with it, or with previous versions, and I have been downloading and using Oracle's version since Apple stopped at Java 6 years ago. Your mileage may vary.

I would try contacting the manufacturer of your printer (brother). From the looks of it, the all in one printer/scanner device has seperate drivers for scanner and printer. maybe there's a bug there. Have you updated these drivers? Again, I'd check with the printer company.
