Twoof the best roles in Football Manager 2024 showcasing the evolution of the traditional playmaker are the Libero and the Roaming Playmaker. Here, Ihor Crusadertsar uses Manchester City stars John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne to illustrate how to use both roles in your latest FM24 saves.

Having players who can perform two different jobs at the same time can be an absolute game-changer for your tactics in Football Manager 2024. Few player roles fit that bill better than the Complete Forward.

These rotations see players take up a different position while in possession than they occupy while defending, such as an Inverted Full-Back tucking in as an additional central defender or Central Midfielders pushing forward to join the attack.

Making the most of these rotations will allow you to implement positional play principles in your tactics and become a more dynamic attacking team in every career. In this blog, Dan Gear explains which roles trigger these positional rotations and shows them in action.

The role of the Winger in football has changed dramatically over the years. No longer are they just expected to hug the touchline and whip in lofted deliveries for tall, old-school centre forwards. Now, just like their teammates in other positions, they have to be much more versatile.

Here, SteinkelssonFM uses Brighton & Hove Albion to break down all of the different winger roles in Football Manager 2024 and how you can effectively build your tactics around getting the most from them.

In recent years, Brighton & Hove Albion have been widely heralded for their style on the pitch and strategy off it. Many other clubs in Europe have taken note of their innovations and sought to replicate them.

As football evolves and clubs continually seek out new ways to outsmart their rivals, it has become essential for football managers to constantly innovate when it comes to on-field roles and tactical decisions.

Football Manager is no different and with each year we see the game adding new tactical options and player roles. This is both a case of keeping up with real-life developments but also giving you more room as boss to refine your own unique approach.

Since its introduction to the Football Manager series in FM18, the Mezzala role has been hugely popular. Drenched in historic tradition, the role offers dynamism and creativity in the middle of the pitch and gives managers tremendous tactical flexibility.

As football managers have become more comfortable sharing and discussing complex tactical concepts and terminology with the press and the public, the debate surrounding the sport grows ever richer. However, that also means sometimes the wider football conversation can become harder to follow as the concepts involved become more and more specialised.

Since the 1970s, pressing has become increasingly important in football. As more teams focus on regaining the ball quickly and efficiently, pressing with commitment and intelligence is key to success in the modern game.

Top coaches often talk about finding the extra player in the attacking phase of the game but this applies to defending too, as positioning your players on the pitch in a way that gives you a numerical advantage in the areas where you want your players to defend the hardest and gain back the ball is an important principle.

However, this is not the only way to get good coverage in the defensive areas. One of my favourite defensive shapes is a simple 4-4-1-1 with the two central midfield players operating slightly deeper in the Defensive Midfielder strata.

When assessing your own squad or delving into the transfer market to acquire some new defenders, the important Attributes you need to look for, beyond the obvious things like Tackling, Positioning and Jumping Reach, are Mental Attributes.

From my experience, three absolutely essential Attributes for your defensive midfielders and Central Defenders are Anticipation, Composure and Concentration.

Defensive decision-making does not happen in a vacuum. It is done in the context of very stressful, high-stakes situations, such as defending against an opponent who is actively trying to get past you and score. Composure measures how unaffected a player is by this mental pressure while making a decision or performing an action.

Looking at Physical Attributes, there are three key ones: Strength, Jumping Reach and Stamina. Strength is simply a measure of how well a player can exert their physical force upon an opposition player. It affects how likely a player is to succeed in physical situations such as: shielding the ball from an opponent while standing or dribbling, tackling, marking an opponent, or competing for the ball either in the air or in open play on the ground. No matter how technical your opponent is, they can still be outmuscled by a more physical defender. In any team sport, strength and size matter.

With these tips for having a defensive plan for building your tactics, some optimal formations to use and a focus on the key Attributes needed for successful defending, you should have some stronger ideas on how to make your team better defensively in FM24, no matter what style of football you want to play.

Having been away for a while, I've noticed that the game has evolved significantly, particularly in terms of tactics. As I'm eager to get up to speed with the latest tactical strategies and approaches, I've joined this forum to seek guidance from the community.

Since I'm approaching FM24 as a complete novice, I'm looking for recommendations on where to find the best tactical guides, tutorials, and reads to help me grasp the intricacies of the game. I'm willing to forget everything I used to know and start from scratch, so any resources tailored for beginners would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you @R0ca! I've had a look through the content there and it's all extremely helpful.

Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of a good guide for how to approach and handle preseason?

Aside from that, one of the big changes since 2018 is how fatigue is managed within the game (ie. it's far more punishing than it used to be). What kind of football are you interested in? I'd personally recommend either playing to your team's strengths or trying to emulate a type of football you particularly like to watch IRL. I am a fan of defensive approaches and @crusadertsar has done a write up here on how to approach the game in a more patient approach:

In general keeping things simple is a good idea when coming back to the game (and then adding Tis and Pis slowly from there as you develop your style of play). That can help you from feeling overwhelmed from the intentionally obscure tactics screen. I'd also recommend checking out the data hub, a great addition to the FM series.

You could create a tactic inspired by real life managers, looking to emulate the style of play used by the best coaches in the world. This can be really fun, but managers like Pep Guardiola have had many years and abundant resources to build a team in their vision.

The solution? I think our best bet would be a 4-4-2. It makes use of our wide players, who are really good, and allows us to have an extra attacker up front to work the ball towards in our quick transition.

Thank you for the introduction. I will use this as an inspiration as I have been recently promoted with my team and instead of being the favorite to win the title, I will probably find myself battling for avoiding relegation. I am just wondering, what would be the key attributes to look for, when wanting to play possession based football/counter attack ? I am right now struggling to find the balance in my save. Thanks !
