Long execution time for "getEditedCount" query on the search page

The query to retrieve the count of edited records (getEditedCount) on the search page is taking 12 to 20 seconds to complete.
As a temporary solution, I changed the source code to remove this metric from the search page. There are about 8 million records in both, the [RDF.].[Triple] and [RDF.].[Node] tables which I believe to be the reason for the poor performance when joining the two tables.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue on the database side instead of the source code?
