The new SmartDraw desktop app has all the things you like about the old one, plus features only available in the online version. You can run it from an icon on your desktop and access all your existing files. It also gives you all the modern improvements and features we've added to the online version of SmartDraw.

SmartDraw has been creating diagramming software since 1994. The desktop version adds the ability to integrate with third-party apps and tools and generate diagrams automatically from their unique datasets. Infographics, organizational charts, flowcharts, project management diagrams and schedules, maps and engineering drawings are some of the templates the company makes available to users.

Using a tool like SmartDraw helps level the playing field and streamlines the process of creating basic engineering drawings. The engineering templates available in SmartDraw are helpful for creating simple plans and schematics that are standardized. These templates cannot serve as a full substitute for engineering plans and details, but they are a starting point to quickly convey system-level information. The new release adds automated symbols and line styles to make it even easier to create engineering drawings. Just simply choose from a toolbox full of common engineering symbols to add them to a line and quickly drag them into place on the sheet.

SmartDraw claims that among its millions of application and users, 75 percent are Fortune 500 companies. Its program has tons of industry-specific shapes ready to drop into a drawing without having to resort to a real CAD program.

SmartDraw has been creating easy to use diagram software for over 20 years to the delight of millions of users. Just as the way you work has changed over the years, so has SmartDraw. So we have created SmartDraw Cloud: SmartDraw that runs in a web browser with the full power of our Windows version. And better yet, SmartDraw Cloud is fully integrated with the new SmartDraw 2016 for Windows. You can move seamlessly between the Windows and Cloud versions. Start a diagram at work on your Windows desktop and finish it on the go on your iPad or Mac laptop. You'll never have to worry about working on the latest version of a diagram or device compatibility again. The Best Visio AlternativeOver the years, SmartDraw has proven itself a better alternative to Visio on a Windows platform, but now it's also the best alternative on all other platforms, including Macs.Unlike Visio, which is tied to Windows, SmartDraw Cloud lets you create and edit documents on any device you wish to use. You can share documents with anyone on any platform whether they use SmartDraw or not. With SmartDraw Cloud's new Visio import feature, you can both share and edit Visio files online too. Compared to Visio, SmartDraw continues to give you intuitive tools that make drawing feel automated, thousands more built-in symbols and templates, and sophisticated integration with the tools you already use from Google Drive. And SmartDraw can import even the most complex Visio files, making the transition to replace Visio painless.

Paul: Yes. Cloud is fully compatible and integrated with the desktop version. SmartDraw 2016 on the desktop can directly open any file created in Cloud by accessing your Cloud account. Likewise 2016 allows you to save a file created in Windows directly to your Cloud account where you can edit it further with the Cloud version. There is no data loss. They use the same file format. Round tripping is encouraged.

It doesn't seem to happen if it's a document that was already saved in Dropbox, and I am updating it. It only happens when I try to save a brand new document, or when I try to save a document under a new name (which basically makes it a brand new document). I'll do "save as," set it to save in a Dropbox folder, and title the document 5M.docx, and it sets to work doing that...and then it just reverts back to being an untitled document, and when I look in the folder, the document is not saved in there.

This never happens except when I'm trying to save in my Dropbox folder--it's definitely specific to Dropbox. It doesn't do this every time I try to save something to Dropbox, but it does it a decent percentage of the time. When it happens, I have to save the **bleep** document on my desktop instead, and then drag it into the Dropbox folder, which works fine.

2) I'm not sure whether I get this experience if the Desktop isn't running. Because I have to switch computers regularly, it's really important for me to leave the app running, so I haven't been able to check.

3) Just now, I had a document I wanted to save as "Summative assn answer key" but right after trying to save it in the relevant dropbox folder, its title reverted to "Document2", which doesn't happen when you successfully save a document under a new title. When I look in the folder, there *is* a document there titled "Summative assn answer key", but it's 0 bytes, and when I open it, it's just a blank page. (The document I was trying to save was not blank!) If I look at that file in "Version history," it shows it as having been created at the appropriate time, but as being 0 bytes.

I don't think it's very plausible that the problem is with Word and Powerpoint and Adobe, so I haven't tried reinstalling those. Given that this problem arises for all file formats I regularly use, I feel certain the problem must be with Dropbox.

I've had the exact same problem for months, most often with Word documents. I can save those files anywhere else on my computer, but not to Dropbox folders. Originally the problem occurred when trying to save a new document or "save as." But now I can't even save a file that's already named.

I should add that I did a full repair of my Office installation, plus uninstalled an reinstalled Dropbox (just two days ago). And the problem doesn't happen 100% of the time. But probably 80 - 85% of the time. It used to only happen when:

Not only that, but for quick and simple designs, you can use SmartDraw to throw together ready-made building blocks like office spaces, bedrooms, and dining rooms. This makes it a great tool for interior designers or novices who want to give their architect an idea of what they are looking for.

SmartDraw sets itself apart by the huge volume of templates it has to offer. These include diagrams for the health sector like family history genograms, personal charting, electrical diagrams, body charts, and nutrition graphics. Engineers will also get a lot to work with such as vehicle designs, electrical wiring diagrams, and software project plans. If you run an interdisciplinary team, this software could be for you.

To get started with SmartDraw, you can either download the Windows desktop version by entering your email or create an account for SmartDraw online. Both will prompt you to purchase during your seven-day free trial.

Specific to the online edition of SmartDraw is the ability to sync with Google Drive and other Google products. What may surprise you is that the online edition has everything the PC edition does with just a handful of exceptions. This even includes architecture and genealogy tools that are hard to find on this kind of cloud-based software.

After purchasing a license, you will receive free updates and premium support for one year. Following that, the maintenance and upgrade service costs $69.95 per year. However, upgrading is not required to run the program. It is also worth mentioning that for more than five users you can get a yearly subscription for $595, which could be a good deal for businesses.

If you are looking for software that can do it all, SmartDraw is the tool for you. For advanced industry-specific capabilities, you may want to explore other options, but in all likelihood, SmartDraw will be the right way to produce any type of diagram or chart you need without blowing your budget.

I'm trying to help a friend with a virus issue. He seems to have fake virus software called "System Check" installed. It has hidden all of his desktop icons, blocked access to the task manager and crippled his antivirus software. When he contacted me about the problem I advised him to disconnect his system from the internet and it has not been reconnected since.

He booted in safe mode and installed MBAM from a CD. Malwarebytes found and fixed three issues in safe mode but upon reboot the virus was still there. He rebooted back into safe mode and ran MBAM again but it found nothing this time. Also, he was able to run his Norton software from his ISP in safe mode but if didn't find anything either.
