On the topic of plotting our levels of play and wellness, I would say that over the last two weeks I've had a negative correlation. I don't feel very well, because it's the end of term and my grading pile is ENORMOUS. Yet, because of that fact, sometimes I spend hours playing online games even though they don't make me feel better. In fact, I play them sourly, unsatisfyingly, desperately suppressing the guilt at not working at what I need to, and giving myself heartburn.

I bet that's a fairly common thing among my students when in avoidance/abnegation mode, too.

Of the eight motivations for playing (computer) games that Hunicke, Leblanc, and Zubeck identify in their MDA schema--Sensation, Fantasy/make-believe, Narrative/drama, Challenge, Fellowship, Discovery, Expression, and Submission/abnegation--I've been relying on abnegation in my playtime a lot over the past two years, and not always in a way that promotes wellness.

Just saying play is not *always* a good thing or correlating with wellness.

Nicky

Hi all!

So, I went to the Arizona Science Center during spring break and they had these really fun interactive polls that tested hypotheses (see examples below). I thought that might be fun to incorporate into my class somehow. Last night I made one about the correlation between play and wellness (see image of my poll below). Of course this is a very flawed research study (!) it’s more for fun and to help remind people about the importance of play. Anyway, I started it last night in my class, each student put a dot on the board for their intersection of level of play and level of wellness over the past two weeks. There were only 11 of us so I had them “text a friend” to get some more dots on the board. We even pulled in people from the hallway who were just walking by the classroom. So far I am seeing a positive correlation between play and wellness (of course, not surprised) but I would love to make this an ongoing poll and get more dots! So if you would like to play along, email me back and let me know your level of play and your level of wellness over the past two weeks and I will add a dot for you on the poster! Anonymously of course.

Umm for online... if you meet sync on Zoom you can use Zoom annotation. If
you don't have sync sessions you can create a Google slide with the table
and ppl put in dots?

It's cool how you can do v different things w this concept!

I love this idea too! I also use Google Jamboard for my virtual courses. It can work like a white board with sticky notes and/or dots. Thanks for sharing!
