Hi,

I've been away for a while because I've just (finally) changed jobs.
I've found a new job at a new company and I've found out that the mvc
for their websites is Kohana (just another Kodeigniter wannabe).

There are many advantages (as opposed to the disadvantages) to use
this framework, that I've just found and that made me wonder... what
made this company use this framework??

Have you even heard about this mvc or is it just an 'apple' fad?

Cheers!

Kohana has been around for a long time. It is a fork of an older version of CodeIgniter that someone wanted to make their own. I've never played with it - mostly because I've never liked CodeIgniter - but I looked at it once upon a time.

Truthfully, the decision to use one framework over another, sadly, often times comes down to who the ONE developer was that was working on the project and what he/she was able to find on the internet at the time. From there you just learn to build around your current architecture because migrations to a new platform are usually painful and expensive.

Just to make some sense over this:

This company is hiring somewhat 4-8 developers in a matter or months. So it's growing fast but the most of us that were hired to work with php never heard of Kohana and that's why I'm so curious about this whole thing. I mean: Why not just use some top mvc's out-there like zend or (I was gonna write codeigniter) something else? Why do you use some guy's mvc and hire some guys to learn your preferred framework? As far as I've learned, I can honestly say that this project that I'm working with is pretty sophisticated because there are many websites on the same app/system (base).  This job actually takes me back to my early php/html days because it's part new and part old. Javascript functions in the html, css; still no template system (Something like Smarty -- the php still goes in the html)-- so there's much to fix/upgrade.

Reliable?
Useful?
Popular?

Do these words apply for the mvc's in every website? Or is it just a personal opinion?

Cheers!

Its honestly cheaper to hire competent developers that can pick up on the framework than it would be to hire devs to rewrite the platform. But from a business perspective, it can all be wrapped up into one. If I hire a team of engineers that can build out what I want now but at the same time have them build or integrate the platform of the future why not leverage that?

well said.

step one: use something that lots of people banged their heads to build;
step two: it's new. so what? can't learn this stuff? hire someone who can;
step three: learn the new stuff (hardly) ? 'sallary' : 'fired';

The end;

Hi,

Its difficult to find engineer who can develop platform with future vision and complete and proper understanding of all stuff(design,testing,coding) present in development.Framework are already developed by team of experts in those areas so it's like better and ideal way to handle projects.

Vishal
