We are busy turning over beds and transplanting fall and overwinter crops. It often feels that life on the farm is living a season ahead. My goal is to keep the farm stand open until Thanksgiving. One of the many things I love about farming is the seasonality of the work. This past week, I have been working on preparing the parts of my fields that are done with their work for this season for next season! I sowed a winter cover crop (rye/vetch mix, Austrian winter peas, fava beans, and crimson clover) to add organic matter and nutrients back into the soil, reduce erosion and suppress weeds.
As I sowed my cover crop seed, I could not help but think about everything that has happened in the year since I sowed my first winter cover crop. I am feeling thankful for the past year. Thankful for all the hours, thought and energy my dad put into my dream, this farm and thankful to my mom who is a wonderful, cheerful presence at the farmers market and thankful for everyone who has helped or encouraged me since I started farming three years ago.

Many excellent points in the comments here, and I just wanted to add one regarding the flow of profits.. eating organic usually supports local growers and subsequently sustainable agricultural practices, whereas buying conventional ultimately supports large corporations like Monsanto, ConAgra, and Cargill that promote destructive monocrop farming and excessive petrochemical use.

Cons: Some may not enjoy slight artificial butteriness. Chocolate can get messy. Only seven cookies. Traumatic experiences involving Betty Crocker. Being attacked by a clan of vengeful lobsters.
White cabbage is the main ingredient in a traditional coleslaw, it can be used in healthier Asian coleslaws without dairy and with spicier dressings. The meltingly soft texture is a natural partner for bacon.
Last year, while we were digging out the terracing for this new garden, we found a small black-currant bush in our way. There are two currant bushes that grow naturally in our area. First, the wax currant, which is not very tasty and has a weird texture. These, of course, flourish all over our property. Secondly is the black currant, which is sweet and delicious and very useful. I have tried many times over the years to get a black currant going for us. I have tried everything from branch cuttings, to seeds, to digging them up by the roots. It never works and I had given up. But since this little bush was in our way and would have to be removed, the kids really wanted to put it in a pot and try to get it going. I had little hope for it, but helped them dig it up and put it in a pot. It then got put in the garage and everyone completely forgot about it.
On the other hand, cooking the chicken directly in the broth works awesomely! It imbues the chicken with all that delicious brothy flavor, and mushrooms add a meaty flavor (umami for the win!).
