I am not sure WHERE to post this... but I am writing this because today I found thru my firewall (Intego NetBarrier) that the plugin/application in question "com.apple.WebKit.64" tried to make a connection to "mpsnare.isnare.com" I informed Apple AND Intego about the issue and I am waiting on a reply. I ran my Intego Anti Virus and I also ran Malware Bytes and neither detected any Malware OR Viruses!! I am going to have to manually remove the plugin and all the files its associated with at this point. I used EasyFind to locate them and hopefully removing the files will solve the problem. This little gem has been on my Mac since Oct /14/ 2016. As of now I have blocked any connections going out of my iMac with NetBarrier to the site thru this plug-in/application. My question is.... what should I do to further protect myself and should I be concerned that if it's not the plug-in itself...WHAT is it and how can I remove it from my system? Any help would be appreciated. Thx! BTW.. I searched the net and Apple and there is NOTHING about this anywhere.
Well.. the software didn't actually tell me this information... it's a bit like Little Snitch... the plug-in/app wanted to get past the firewall and connect... so I opened the drop down on it in the firewall and that was the address that was showing that it wanted to connect to.. I kinda stumbled on it by accident.. the software never warned me about anything. The reason why I looked is because at the same time a identical app called com.apple.Webkit. wanted to connect at the same time.. and it's been ages since I actually seen this try to connect.. so it sparked my interest and low and behold... that is what it was trying to connect to... for example... if you look at the pic I posted.. it was in the same fashion in the drop down menu as shown in the pic. If it actually pops up again and wants to connect.. you can bet your bottom dollar I am going to get a pic. ?
The mpsnare.isnare.com site is an activity tracking site, used by some sites to track visitors. Some site you've been visiting must incorporate that tracking service, and Intego is probably blocking that as part of an attempt to block web tracking.
I did uninstall a couple Intego products that I wasn't using awhile back.. I imagine that is why they failed... but all seems normal except for Java... so I am not sure what is wrong.. everything seems normal enough. I am thinking that maybe it's hiding in a Bookmark? I tried visiting the same websites when I noticed it.. but I haven't figured out how to re-create it yet.
as Leroy said, uninstall Net Barrier. It's a waste of resources and clearly doesn't work. Installing anti-virus programs on a Mac is like installing dinosaur repellent. Although the latter may be more useful.
Well... could their be an actual script somewhere that is using 64 to access the server? I mean... is it possible that it was written and placed there by a email I opened or a site I visited... or could it be something else? Honestly. I never had a issue with a virus or malware before on a Mac... and running software to detect it like Malwarebytes shows nothing....even ViriusBarrier detects nothing... all I am asking is this actually possible and if so... could this actually be a new threat that no one is aware of? Because I haven't seen this plug-in connect to the net for quite sometime on my system and I haven't visited any new sites out of my normal ones... like I said.. it was activity that I only seen a few months ago and haven't seen since tonight...AND it was the ONLY address that it wanted to connect to...? I been using Intego products since 2005.. so Im kinda dubious about your statement and Leory's statement that the software is garbage... my instinct say's that this could be a new threat... and if so.. is there a possibility that something else is accessing "64" on my system? I don't mean to be a jerk.. but the folks I spoke with at Apple seemed to be concerned enough to have me contact their phishing email with what I found.. either way.. I just wanted to discuss the topic and brainstorm it. I am more curious than wanting to fix it atm.. I mean.. don't get me wrong.. I DO want to remove it.. but I want to understand what it is first before I go deleting the "wrong" stuff. lol
Actually no one is picking on Intego in particular. All anti-virus products are useless with the one exception they can flag infected Windows files so you don't share them with friends running Windows.
There are better ways to avoid adware & malware. The biggest is common sense. If you are going to fret over every process or file you don't understand you will never have any time left to use your computer.
I can say it is a poor practice having Gatekeeper set to anywhere, making yourself vulnerable. I provided a link to Gatekeeper best practice above. I recommend you change this security setting to more robust, making yourself less vulnerable.
