Nvidia says a Shield update arriving this month will make it so "the GameStream feature will no longer be available in app." If you try to skip the Shield update, GameStream will still stop working at some point (and possibly be removed from the GeForce Experience app in Windows). In the meantime, trying to dodge that update means not using GeForce Now, one of Nvidia's recommended replacements, on your Shield and missing out on all the other update fixes and features that arrive with system updates.

If you're a Shield owner, like I am, this stinks. Shield devices have merits of their own, receiving the longest and most consistent stream of updates of any Android/Google TV device ever released. They're still perfectly functional as stream boxes (and even more appealing if Google lands an NFL package). But a big benefit of having both a Shield and a GeForce graphics card will soon be shunted.

The other Nvidia suggestion is GeForce Now. While it's pretty impressive at its higher tiers, it also provides only a limited slice of your games library. It requires a great broadband connection and a monthly subscription, and it serves far fewer clients than Moonlight (including, notably, Apple TV).

While GameStream was meant to push Nvidia gear, it also sparked the creation of the wonderful Moonlight software. This free, open-source app has given people access to the output of their GeForce cards from all kinds of screens since 2018. It's how I played Marvel's Midnight Suns on an iPad on my couch and Elden Ring on a Windows laptop at my in-laws' place, streaming from my own home.

With Moonlight, you can beam a game from an Nvidia card inside a Windows PC to a Windows/Mac/Linux computer, Chrome OS, iOS and Android and Amazon FireOS devices, a Raspberry Pi 4, and, if you're willing to tinker, homebrew apps on the PlayStation Vita, Wii U, LG's WebOS, and other single-board computers. It also works with a Steam Deck, as Moonlight installs fairly easily as a Linux app on that system. As noted, this device doesn't even have to be on your home network if you've set up your game-streaming PC and network as such.

So I've been using Moonlight Game streaming with Sunshine as the host (on my BigBox build which is a Core i7 8700K with 32GB Ram and RTX 4070 Super) and it was streaming BigBox perfeclty up until last month,

Now everything I stream including all my emus and PC games and even videos outside of BigBox play perfectly and are smooth but BigBox animations and videos crawls to like 3fps (though the sound is still fine and not lagging) but as soon as I laucnh a PC game or Rom whatever I launch including Retroarch runs fine at full FPS

All my PC games and Roms are on the same RAID drive as BigBox so they all sit on the same drive array and when running BigBox natively (not streaming) it runs smooth as hell as well it's only when gamestreaming with Moonlight

I am trying to use VirtualHere with an Xbox One wireless adapter on a Chromecast w/ Google TV while streaming games via Moonlight/GeForce Experience. While streaming the desktop, my controller inputs are sent to the PC and I can move my mouse around and click things no problem. Once in a game, however, it appears that any actual controller inputs (joystick, face buttons, etc) aren't being registered. I can hit the Guide button to open the Steam overlay, at which point I can navigate with the joystick and face buttons, and the pop-up appears in the bottom-right saying my controller config was loaded, but the game itself just won't register any controller inputs. This does not happen with Steam Link, but the quality of the stream itself is nearly unplayable compared to Moonlight. Launching Steam Big Picture through Moonlight doesn't fix it either. I asked about this on the Moonlight Stream Discord, but have yet to receive a response, so I am not 100% sure if this is a VH issue or a Moonlight issue, but I figured I would bring it to your attention anyway. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

However, despite the theory presented in this thread, my issue persists whether or not it's a Steam game that is being launched, so I'm not sure if Steam is entirely to blame for this weird input issue. I figured I would post this finding in case you wanted to investigate it further.

I found a better fix which allows you to launch the games directly again. The problem stems from the virtual controller that Nvidia enables when starting a stream. I believe this "controller" is forcing itself to be player 1, which leaves the VH controller as player 2 and thus unable to control anything. I found a thread where someone shares a method to disable this virtual controller, and doing so has allowed my Xbox One controller to work as player 1 again. The fix needs to applied every time there's an update to GeForce Experience, as it involes re-naming some dll files, but it works. Not sure if this is something that can be fixed on your end, but hopefully anyone else having this issue will come across this thread for the fix.

If using RetroOZ on the RGB10 Max or ODROID Go Super, you can find Moonlight as its own section in the main menu. If it is not displaying, go into Main Menu > UI Settings > Visible Systems and make sure it is checked. Make sure that you are running RetroOZ v0.50 or higher (v0.51b or higher is preferred).

The instructions are generally the same for both ArkOS, AmberELEC, and RetroOZ, other than the location of Moonlight and its settings on your device. For ArkOS and AmberELEC, you will find it in your Ports section after you have installed it via PortMaster, and in JELOS and RetroOZ it will be located in its own section in the Main Menu.

If using Sunshine to connect to your device, complete the first five bullets in that section now before moving on. If running a NVIDIA GeForce Experience-capable PC, be sure to open that app before proceeding.

Having an issue when I try to pair it with my PC. Will not connect whether I put in my IP address or PC name. I am using a 351P with the latest 351Elec software (Pineapple Forest). My PC is running the Nvidia 3070 and naturally has Geforce installed. I have all of my drivers updated and made sure Portmaster and Moonlight are running the updated versions.

Having an issue on my 351v running 351ELEC where controls work fine once I launch Moonlight but when I try to pair with my computer, none of the controls work anymore. Do you happen to know of a solution?

Hi Russ. for PowKiddy X55 JELOS, the built on moonlight are 30fps by default, so gameplay are not as smooth. theres no settings to change the framerate for the built in moonlight.
on my RG353PS running ARKOS, the moonlight app in portsmaster has more options to choose from, including resolutions & framerate. so i copied the moonlight folder and the .sh files to my X55 and tried moonlight from portsmaster instead of the built in. the app boot but i cant enter or type in any input when trying to connect to my computer ip address, connected my bluetooth and tried to type it that way also doesnt worked. any ideas on how to solve this minor issues?

By this point, many people are familiar with cloud gaming, sometimes known as game streaming. With services such as Xbox Game Pass and Amazon Luna, you can play PC games without necessarily having PC hardware. Servers owned by the companies run the games, and stream gameplay over the internet to client devices. Moonlight is much like these services, but your gaming rig is the server.

Moonlight is an open source game streaming host that lets you stream games from a PC with an supported GPU to your Batocera box. It's a game streaming software similar to Steam Link, a piece of hardware that was discontinued in 2018 and that now lives as an Android/iPhone app.

You need to install the Sunshine server on your gaming PC. This is the PC that will render the game assets and do all the heavy lifting. It will also compress the resulting video of the game played into a low-latency H.264 or HEVC video stream that will be sent to the Batocera Moonlight client. For each of the supported game installed on your PC this script has now created /userdata/roms/moonlight/*.moonlight files, a gamelist.xml and might have scraped some metadata into /userdata/roms/moonlight/downloaded_images/ as well.

it can be safely ignored. It just means that Batocera couldn't get some data from theGamesDB, so there will be some metadata missing in your gamelist.xml. Your games are still likely to be listed, though.

The future of PC gaming is portable, and I am here for it. Of course, PCs and dedicated consoles aren't going away anytime soon, but most gamers will be perfectly happy with their handheld devices, in my opinion, and I am already one of them. Not only am I spending more time away from my desk, playing games on my Steam Deck, but I am doing so without compromising on quality or missing out any of my favorites that aren't tied to my Steam library. I've also been playing a lot of my PC games remotely on various devices like smartphones, MacBook, and more with Moonlight, and can't recommend it enough. In fact, here are a few reasons why I believe every PC gamer should consider checking out Moonlight and dive into the world of remote gaming.
