Thereare three routes you can take. First, you can call Epson and explain the issue. Sometimes they will be nice enough to send you a new set of cartridges. They may even send you a new printer if you're really lucky.
Before moving forward, check to see that the firmware update worked. If it did, go ahead and purchase an activation key by clicking the third link. If you want a paper manual and are unsure of how to do this process, click on the fourth link.
If you have Norton Antivirus, you may get another popup saying that the activation does not have a valid digital signature. Just tell it to always run and then click okay. The software always updates itself the first time you run it, and then you should see your printer listed in the drop-down menu.
I hope this blog helped fix your auto-updated Epson printer! For more DIY printer tips and tricks, follow me on YouTube at Kevin at BCH. I made a video walkthrough of this post, which you can view on my channel. Happy printing!
Printer makers sell them cheap and get their profits from the sale of cartridges and therefore do firmware updates to make sure they get the sales until the third party makers work out how to get around the update. It is a competition between the printer makers and the third party cartridge makers.
I need to see if the firmware update on the Epson WF7820 can be reverted or removed so that the printer will accept and recognize 3rd party cartridges as it did before the automatic software update changed the firmware. I thought I had locked out the automatic updates but apparently, I did not, or the software update made the change.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

The most promising option I tried was to force the printer into update mode by holding down the power button and pressing on the upper right corner of the display. I then tried to run various Epson Firmware Update programs (older versions). The printer is plugged in via the USB cable. It lets me start the upgrade, but, never finishes. I let it run for an hour and it simply stops at 45% (transfering file to the printer).
I used a tip from another individual on another site. I forced the printer into recovery mode. I ran a firmware update/downgrade and unplugged the printer while it was updating the software. That forced the printer into recovery mode. I then ran the older firmware update program (from 2018). It ran for a few minutes and the light on the printer flashed for about 5 minutes. Finally, the printer came back and it now recognizes my third party cartridges.
Beyond the profit motivation there are other factors at play. 3rd party toners rarely are exact color matches for OEM toner, but who does the consumer blame when their prints no longer look the same? In most cases, not the cartridge vendor, they blame the printer and say it is defective, which is not accurate. The printer is designed to expect a certain colour gamut from the toners and if the toner is outside the expect values, it simply cannot adjust itself to provide accurate color rendition.
Weird coincidence, with the change to the new format Spiceworks shows me this 2 month old post. More info if someone stumbles onto this can be found here: Epson firmware update disables cloned ink!!! - Hardware - Spiceworks Community
My Epson printer constantly displays a message advising Firmware Update Available but when I use the Epson software updater to get to the firmware update option, it is not there. The update message stays on the printer.
When putting the drivers into a new Win7 install, Epson's search-and-destroy printer identifier and installer decided on its own to update firmware; of course, it crashed. Printer is now stuck in partial-start state - when you power it up, Power LED flashes and beeps once or twice as normal, display starts to come up, then it quits.
What is the procedure to do a hardware reset on the WF-3520 (panel keys held down, timing...) to get the bootloader in the microcontroller to reset and go to the "Recovery Mode" function where you can install firmware?
Epsons are just all DUDs now. Biggest piece of crap cant connect to wifi cant connect with the usb cable and on a laptop that can it fails to print red or blue! No the Iink is not empty No the Head cleaner does not work I got 10 pages out a brand-new printer and it went Kaput! Piece of crap. Still trying a yr later and as soon as it gets to Firmware update it freezes says the printer isn't there and round n round in circles. It's the 'Fancy new cartridgeless' DUD!
Despite this is for a d different printer than my 7620 and it was a Windows 7 generation issue, it does not respond to the core problem which is the Epson Software Updater fails continually. Getting sent to a website that tells you to go through the process that does not work is of not value at all.
In addition Epson has refused to respond to direct requests for help with this. I would like to be able to download the needed files and update my fimware without using the Epson Software Updater. Oh yea, I reinstalled the upload too so I know it is fresh and running.
"You need more reputation points to vote someone down." Ha, more BS. It still does not help me. A search on the Epson website for eprom chip returns a variety of gadgets to hang a TV from the ceiling.
Epson sometimes post details, or at least a description, of printer firmware updates but only, AFAIK, on their Japanese site. People have pointed me in the right direction to get details on updates for my 7500, for example.
Well, I take another aproach, especially with firmware. When my printer asks for a firmware update, I update it. Most likely this firmware has a lot to do with the new features in the Media Installer. I have never had an issue with any P800/700/900 firmware updates. So do it.
This quote from Steve Jobs, as well as the support of family, friends, and loyal followers from many years are what inspired me to create this new website that is dedicated to photography. There are a lot of websites featuring photography. Many are good; in fact, many have been created and run by friends of mine. That is probably what I like most about photography. You make a lot of friends with whom, more than anything else, you share a passion and love for photography in many ways.
photoPXL was created around a dinner table with friends. This site will be about the community of photography, a place where young and old alike can share their stories, learn about the art and craft of photography, and gain an understanding of what it takes to Enhance Your Vision.
One of the most exciting features of the new site will be building a community using photographer profile pages. This will be a place where you can share your images with other readers and see what others are doing with theirs. There will also be a forum where you can ask questions and share your knowledge, further developing the sense of community.
Photography for me has always been personal. I can be really serious sometimes, working to catch a certain image, but no matter what I never forget to have fun. I want this site to mean the same thing for you and be a place where you can come and experience many photography-related topics and have fun while doing so.
Step one - Run the firmware install program. It will stall at about 71% after the printer has turned off and back on. Start Windows Task Manager (Press Ctrl + Alt + Del together and select Task Manager.) Sometime around 80% the printer will make one last sound. End the InkChip task before you get the error message. If you let the error come up, the program will set the "failed" flag and the Activation program will not run.
Step 3 - Tap the second empty open box (Activation Code box) to move your cursor to the Activation key portion. Tap the "Activate online" key again. The Input S/N window will reappear. This time enter your Activation Key exactly as it appears in the e-mail. (It's easiest to copy and paste it.) Tap the "OK" button. You will get an invalid S/N error again. Tap Cancel. The lower open box will fill with computer codes representing your Activation Key. IMPORTANT: Copy these codes and save them to a text document. If for any reason your firmware gets updated by your printer's company, this is the only way you can reinstall the InkChip firmware WITHOUT having to buy a new key.
Happy, happy, JOY, JOY! You've jumped through all the hoops and all ink cartridges will read as full all the time, and you can put any cartridge that fits in your printer. You can refill your own cartridges or buy filled after-market ones. FREEDOM FROM TYRANNY!
Order #430045 , printer wf-3720 - I'm getting stuck at 99% also and then it tells me the the printer's firmware was not updated and the firmware did not complete. I did try unplugging the power cord and then plugging it back in like in the video. I also tried stopping it before the fail notice but when I do that my printer is not recognized in the activation setup so I cannot enter my serial number or the activation code. Any other suggestions?
2) I combined the steps from the video and SuziniNC. When the program stalled, I unplugged the power cable, for a count of 10, and then plugged it back in again. Then once it was on again, and install was around 85%, I used task manager to end the InkChip task.
Aside from fixing printer issues, printer industries also design firmware updates to limit the use of third-party ink cartridges. Firmware updates are mainly released to fix firmware bugs, crashes, or issues to improve a printer's performance. However, this is not the case if you use remanufactured or third-party ink cartridges.
Did you know that printer industries can automatically update your printer's firmware without you knowing? They can automatically update your printer if your printer update feature has not been turned off, especially if it is connected to your Wi-Fi or through a cable connected directly to your computer with an internet connection.
