[Updated 11/8/19] Netflix has announced that due to technical limitations, as of December 2, 2019, the Netflix streaming service will no longer be supported on several consumer electronics devices, including some from Samsung. This change will impact select 2010 and 2011 Samsung Smart TV models that were sold in the U.S. and Canada. Affected devices will receive a notification reflecting this change.
The lack of proper frame rate match has me using Roku less and less. Almost every major original series or movie on almost every major streaming service is now shot and delivered at a true 24.000fps, which causes stutters on every Roku device during playback. This includes Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video.
What's more, current Roku devices don't even support proper integer refresh rates, which means even if the channel does support Roku's frame rate match feature, it will still display 24.000fps content at 23.976hz, which does nothing to solve the stutter problem.
You've been beating this to death for 3 years. Why would you still use a Roku? No one who uses one cares. I've always used frame rate matching, currently on a Samsung that I sincerely doubt is capable of 120Hz or better refresh. I have no idea what you're seeing, but frame rates are hardly standardized. Look at "Doc Martin" on the Roku channel: 60p. On Tubi: 24p. Pluto: 60p. Vudu: 50p (probably the only one that got it right, but the cameras they used could be set for anywhere from 5 to 75 fps, so who knows?). The one thing that I can see the Samsung do is that a 50p input forces "judder reduction" to the max and it can't be manually overridden. That doesn't happen with 24p or 60p stuff.
Few years before, roku premiere+ used to match frame rate for all the apps. Based on that experience, I recently bought roku ultra. Only youtube, vudu and prime displays automatically at 24p if the source is 24p. Netflix, apple tv, and disney+ videos are converted to 60fps. I have to go back to apple tv 4k.
We understand that you are experiencing issues with the frame rate on some of your streaming apps. We would recommend taking a look at our Support page for more information regarding this: How to change the display refresh rate to match the native format of each movie, video or TV show. Additionally, you can try adjusting the display settings on your TV to see if that makes a difference.
There is no framerate settings in the TV. The TV is capable of displaying 24p, 25fps, 50fps, 30fps and 60fps based on the source. Other devices such as fire tv, apple tv, etc. are automatically sending the native frame rate of the movie. I have the match frame rate set in roku under advanced display settings.
The roku interface is seen at 60fps by the TV. Amazon prime and youtube apps have no problem changing the framerate to 24p if the video source is 24p. It is mainly the netflix and disney+ apps. Though the source of video is 24p, roku is converting the video to 60fps and so the movies are not smooth.
I'm glad it's not just me. This is an absurd thing for Roku to not provide, given the amount of content being put out in actual 24.000fps now. I love my Roku's, but the lack of some of these features is head scratching and the total lack of actual feedback from support is always concerning. There are lingering years long issues that have just gone unresolved.
It's almost like we need to write in to the larger tech sites and Youtube channels that cover this stuff and start asking them to bring this stuff up so more eyes get on it and maybe some pressure gets put on Roku to fix this stuff.
Apple tv can match framerate in all apps except youtube. Android devices can do as well but you have to use kodi with addons. In roku, though it won't match the framerate, there is a workaround to lock the framerate to 24p - you can use it if you know for sure that a movie in say netflix, streams at 24 fps.
Fire stick has a remote shortcut where you can manually change the framerate to anything. But there is no way to find the streaming framerate for a netflix show/movie - you have to try changing to a different framerate until the video is smooth
I'm realistic. They can't support everything, but framerates should be supported and for me, the should absolutely implement CEC volume control for the Roku app. It seems an unbelievable oversight that the app can't control volume.
I'm having something of a bizarre issue with my Fios service. It started a couple weeks ago. Some streaming services work fine (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video) while others do not load videos. (Paramount+, Disney+). When I attempt to play video on these services, it just loads endlessly and then times out.
The services work fine if I switch to cellular network service instead of the home wifi network.
Things I have tried:
Rebooting all devices, including the router
Reinstalling the streaming apps
Factory reset of the router
I called tech support and they tried bifurcating my home wireless network into 5Gg and 2.4G (so I could be sure to connect to 5G) and that didn't work.
Any idea on what this could be? Just trying to get these working so my 3 year old can watch Peppa Pig!
This all happened with an unstable router update a couple weeks ago. I had no internet at all and one of the TVs was down the Verizon tech came out and changed a few things and reset the router and doing tests it upload and downloads fast but I noticed that certain apps and things don't work.
Things work when I use 4 or 5G on the phone no issues there but when at home hooked to the router Disney+, Nest, Instagram and Twitter don't work correctly. (I am sure there are more just the ones I know about). Then the Verizon Stream TV Soundbar Disney+ does not work, the sound bar would not update so I had to turn phone into a hot spot to use the sound bar and update, Also other apps load really slow or don't work at all and hang. Everything was perfect and none of this crap happened prior to that Verizon router update. I was hoped for another router update to fix their errors but nothing happened yet.
If you know how to disable IPV6 on a Verizon Router (CR1000A) and a Fios Extender. Model: E3200 let me know I'll try searching around some more but this is the most about this current situation I can find is to disable IPV6
Found out how to shut if off go to the user guide here -router-cr1000a/ soon as logged in and shut off IPV6 everything started working. Both Stream TV bar and Verizon Samsung S22 Ultra all of a sudden got notifications from apps that were not working properly with IPV6 enabled.
THANK YOU. After 3 months of going back and forth with Verizon, buying a brand new Firestick, and telling them over and over it HAD to be a setting on my router but I wasn't sure which, this was the solution.
For the last few weeks 2 amazon firesticks and one andriod tv box will not work properly for hbomax and disney plus. All work fine if connecting to my cell plan hotspot service. Verizon just had us replace the router and still the same. Seems to be their end blocking traffic. Spent 2 hrs this weekend while they troubleshoot on their end. If don't get a solution will be switching to another provider as this is the main way we use our internet and TV.
Has anyone experienced any issues with streaming devices connecting to their Fios wifi? I have a Stream TV device that Verizon sent as a sign on gift or something. It worked fine for like 2 years then suddenly stopped connecting to my wifi. After many calls, nobody was able to help me and I finally found a solution on Youtube. Once I had the thing connected to my wifi again, none of the apps were working. For example, I can log into HBO Max, trailers will play before the movie begins, but then the movie just buffers and does not play. This is happening on every single streaming app. The apps are clearly connected to the network, but when you try to play anything, it will not play. Now I figured maybe it's the Stream TV device so I went out and bought a Firestick. Same issue is happening with the Firestick. The device is only about a foot away from my router so it's not that. I can stream any app on my iPad connected to the exact same wifi with no problems. Now the weird thing is, when I connect to my phone's hotspot using my cellular data, everything is working. It seems like something is not connecting properly between my router to my TV and to these streaming devices. I have called Verizon probably 10 times now speaking to different people each time. They finally sent me a replacement router which did not help anything. I have factory reset every thing you can think of, tried on different TV's, updated every device to the current software.
I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to post your comments and opinions related to this topic. This topic has been thoroughly discussed and will now be closed. Please feel free to open a new thread for further discussion. Thank you.
The best streaming devices are there for you in your time of need. Whether you have an older display, one that might not be among the best TVs, or you're looking for an upgrade over your current TV interface, a streaming device will gift you access to all of your favorite entertainment.
We test these products across a wide range of use cases, looking not only at general value and features, but ease of use, as well. When searching for a new streaming device, you'll want to consider what type of ecosystem you want to leverage and which speaks to you the most, from the likes of Roku, Google TV, tvOS, and Prime Video.
Our top pick among the best streaming devices is the Roku Streaming Stick 4K, a worthy addition to any TV in need of refreshing. With access to over 24,000 apps, yet costing all but a mere $40, Roku's Streaming Stick 4K is a delight to use and nets users access to its beloved Roku City concept.
But maybe you're not a fan of Roku's interface (or its severe lack in cybersecurity), which means you could always go with either an Apple TV 4K or Chromecast with Google TV for any additional levels of comfort you need in your entertainment needs.
