Release Some Tension is the third studio album by American R&B vocal group SWV. It was released by RCA Records on July 29, 1997. The album guest appearances by E-40, Puff Daddy, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Foxy Brown, Lil' Cease, Lil' Kim, Snoop Dogg and Redman. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments exceeding 500,000 copies in the United States.[4]
The album features hits like "Rain", "Someone", and "Can We". Another single "Lose My Cool" was slated to be released as the album's third single but due to limited radio airplay it was shelved in favor of "Rain" which became one of their most notable hits. The second single "Someone" reached number 19 on the Billboard charts and was certified gold by the RIAA for sales of 500,000 copies.[5][6] The girls and others claimed that this album was rushed and recording began while they were still promoting their second album New Beginning (1996).
AllMusic senior editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine found that "with their third album, SWV attempt to break away from the slick urban straitjacket and return to their hip-hop roots. In order to achieve their goal, the group hired a head-spinning array of producers and collaborators [...] Considering all the extra starpower, it's not all that surprising that SWV occasionally become overwhelmed by their guests, but that doesn't prevent Release Some Tension from being a solid album, particularly when it's propelled by funky singles [...]."[3]
Release Some Tension was also the penultimate album SWV recorded together, before announcing their disbandment in 1998 to pursue solo careers. The same year, they released a Christmas album and then embarked on their solo projects only to reunite in 2005 to work on a new album, I Missed Us, which was finally released in 2012.
Honestly... more attention and intention could have and should have been put into Tension as an album. The re-issue, for me, seems semi-pointless. If anything, release another album and tour it, Tension and Disco.
I'm worried about the setlist, there's so much new material to cover from Disco, Tension, and the new upcoming album. We all know she fills her shows with mostly hits so it won't leave a lot of room for newer songs.
We all know how the setlist is gonna look like... 15 standard Klassiks she's been doing non stop since 2010 + Say Something, Padam, Tension, HOTN the 3 main singles from the new album and 1 obscure album track.
Probably old songs/outtakes for the re-release (Drum and Heavenly Body technically aren't even unreleased anymore and will definitely be part of this; if she wants to do some fan service, she'll release Running too) and new songs (hopefully with a noticeably different sound) for the new album.
yeah the article reads like the Joel songs are part of the sessions for the "full on dance album". Personally I find it strange they're calling it early sessions since she's been in the studio since last year and she even mentioned at the Grammys she was coocking something up.
Who knows. I'd much rather get a new album than a Tension reissue but if they snatched the rights to her itv special we might get a dvd with it and the live tracks will serve as a sort of Infinite Disco to let the Tension tracks shine live at least one time... before 90% of the album is ignored for the next tour lol. Everything neatly packaged could make for a worthy purchase. I saw some comments on twitter that we might even get the single as early as May which would be great as a way to celebrate Padam's 1 year anniversary.
Let's place some bets on what songs we're getting. Drum and Heavenly Body seem like no brainers and tbh I doubt they'll give us those 2 + 5 extra songs so it's most likely 3 of the outtakes we got last year. My money's on To Be In Love, Hello & Running. But I wouldnt mind getting Water, More Than A Feeling and Talk With Your Body/Talk To Me. As long as that Sia song doesnt take one of the 5 spots I promise not to meltdown on twitter like when they announced the SBIT tracklist and it didnt include Into the Blue
"Music has given me my whole life," St. Vincent says. "It was hard work, but it's worth it because every night you get to spend 90 minutes with people and go someplace completely out of this world." Alex Da Corte/Nasty Little Man hide caption
In 2012, St. Vincent released Love This Giant, an album of duets with David Byrne. She also co-wrote the song "Cruel Summer" with Taylor Swift and fronted Nirvana at the band's induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
Tension Span are an Oakland California based trio that unites Noah Landis (Neurosis, Christ On Parade), Geoff Evans (Asunder), and Matt Parrillo (Dystopia, Kicker). They released their album, The Future Died Yesterday late last year on Neurot Recordings. The sound takes the dark doomy bits from their previous bands and mixes in some post punk with bits of New Model Army at times. I sent the band off some questions and Noah replied with some additional bits from Geoff.
