But by 1982, I was in seventh grade, and had developed angst and the ambition to be a writer. I wrote in my journal every night, and began to see my parents, to see me, and also, note my surroundings.
Pop-pop-pop. Somebody shooting again. Crawl over to the television or the stereo, twist the knob until the sounds of Dance Fever or Earth, Wind & Fire overtook the noise of angry men in the twisty, dead-end streets below us.
Unlike the countless boys and men in the Jungle who got hurt, or worse. Every week, I heard tales of so-and-so was shot, or so-and-so was jumped. Bullets peppered concrete and tree trunks. Gunshots became birdsong. The nuts who lived in the apartment beneath us shot at each other every other new moon. What the hell?
I started looking up at those houses on the hill more and more. Did those people, the ones who looked like me, have their sleep interrupted by police helicopters, gang noise, and domestic drama that spilled into courtyards and alleys? Did the kids in those neighborhoods play with each other? Did their birds of paradise look ashy like ours? And how did you get to live in houses like that anyway?
My last April at UC Santa Cruz, I watched televised coverage of my former neighbors looting and fighting. Watched palm tree fronds catch fire. Watched the National Guard setting up sandbags in the parking lot of the Sports Arena. Awed, I could only shake my head and hope for the best.
A lion that lives in the zoo and a lion that lives in the jungle. They have the same genetic make-up and yet the jungle lion is much stronger, more cunning, and able to survive under a variety of conditions. Why is that and how does it apply to developing basketball players?
Around the field will be a Plague Carrier Abomination. After killing it, a white circle will appear. Players standing within will receive Wurm Attractant. While having this effect, at least 20 players must wait near the great wurm in the area indicated by a red arrow. After a brief time, the wurm will burrow and reappear, swallowing all players with the attractant.
Players should use Stability and other defensive effects and skills to help ensure that other players, and themselves, are not knocked out of the area before being swallowed. Going downed or being hit by the Veteran Jungle Wurm's drool, Champion Partially Digested Husk's drool throw, or Amber's Drool will also cause players to lose their Wurm Attractant. As long as Amber has burrowed, it will consume all players standing on the spot with the attractant regardless of how many players are standing there. (i.e. less than 20 players can be swallowed)
Once inside of the wurm's stomach, players will be afflicted with Stomach Acid, which will cause players to lose health every second. Players will need to pick up the Unfortunate Adventurer's harpoon (located behind them) and use it to destroy the Pyloric Valve. Other attacks may be used to destroy it faster, but players will need to hold onto a harpoon before it spits everyone out. When the valve is destroyed, players should not drop the harpoon, as it is necessary for removing Slick Skin. Players will be forcefully expunged from the wurm's stomach and players still holding a harpoon will be affected by Corrosion, making you able to fire it one last time. All players that have been spat out by Amber will also gain Upset Stomach, which will make them unable to gain the attractant until the effect has expired.
Once players have been expelled, they must find a spot with a clear line of shot at Amber. The final shot from the harpoon may be blocked by enemies in the way, causing it to be wasted. If all 20 stacks of Slick Skin have not been removed after all players have fired, players must wait until Upset Stomach has worn off before trying to reenter Amber's stomach to get another harpoon.
Once all 20 stacks have been removed, Amber will fall down and be susceptible to damage for 30 seconds. After which, it will return upright and regain 20 stacks of 20 Slick Skin. Players will need to repeat the process until its head has been severed.
Once its head has been severed, it will burrow underground and the timer will be set to 1 minute if it was the first one to be decapitated. If the other two Great Jungle Wurms are not decapitated within this time limit, the event will fail.
Once all three Great Jungle Wurms have been successfully decapitated, they will all unburrow and the timer will be set to 2 minutes. All three severed heads must be defeated in order for this event to succeed.
Shrunken heads known to some Indigenous cultures as tsantsa or tzantza are a real-world item created from human remains which are religious items for the Jivaroan Indigenous peoples of South America.
Shrunken Heads are the skins of human heads, shrunken and preserved via heating around wooden balls. These heads are often traditionally decorated with beads and knots. Shrunken Heads traditionally signify the bound soul of a vengeful enemy or muisak though European colonists would appropriate them as exotic trophies. Certain Jivoroan peoples such as the Shuar and Achuar had ceremonial feasts thrown following a head-shrinking.
Shrunken Heads are created via skinning an enemy's head and wrapping said pelt around a wooden ball. The remains also have red seeds placed under their nostrils, have their mouths and eyes sewn shut, and have their lips sealed with three palm pins. The heads are subsequently boiled with herbs to tan and shrink the flesh before being removed and rubbed with ash to prevent the head's spirit from leaving. While drying, the skin would be moulded to maintain its human features.
Shrunken heads are a religious practice of Jivaroan peoples performed to bind the soul of an enemy in the afterlife who might be vengeful. Colonists erroneously referred to this practice as, "Headhunting" and deemed shrunken heads as an exotic curios. These westerners pressured Indigenous peoples into trading these heads in the 1910s. Because of this, many Indigenous peoples took to faking the heads with animal leather while some others would grave-rob or murder for heads to trade.
The characters of Trader Sam and Chief Nah-mee used to try and make trades with their inventory of shrunken heads from their Amazon outpost. These were removed in 2021 due to the racism embedded within their inclusion. However, a sign during the 2023 Jingle Cruise included a promotion for, "Trader Sam-ta" mentioning a, "Head start" on Holiday shopping, and not that, "Inventory shrinking".[1][2]
Prior to 2021 changes, these bars had motifs relating to shrunken heads. The bars had a drink called the Shrunken Zombie Head (later renamed to the Zombie Head) which was served in a mug resembling the head of a corpse. The menu descriptions read, "Every time Sam's business shrinks for our favourite head salesman he celebrates with one of these supernatural potions".[3] Both bars also had, "Family trees" of shrunken-heads belonging to Sam's family-members. When the Shrunken Zombie Head was ordered, ghostly noises filled the bars as the heads lit up. The menus also mentioned Sam trading heads for beer.[4]
In this bar was a box containing the shrunken-head of the mother of Captain Jack Sparrow, both of whom were patrons of Sam's bar. Another feature was a portrait of Sam's alleged grandfather Billamongawonga holding a basket of shrunken heads.
Doctor Facilier's Voodoo Emporium contains many sentient shrunken heads connecting to his Loa employers and Facilier has a shrunken head in his possession, presumably belonging to his mother or royal maternal ancestor.
