Everytime I try to print to the printer, an error pops up that says "Load Paper. LTR/Plain 1". I have to manually select the second option to get it to print. I've tried setting the deflaut paper tray several times, but the error still pops up. I print from windows and android. Please help me.
Seems to be a bit of shared pain out there on this topic of late. In my case, my wife's new Lenovo Laptop (Win 11) generated this behavior (where the printer wants to use the slot load above the tray and requires one to alter that default at the printer), whereas my Win 10 Desktop did not. Both running with the printer on the network with a static IP.
These printers are reliable and feature laden. I like ours very much. But this needs work Cannon. There seemingly ought to be a setting both immediately available at the Driver or at the Machine -- and they should talk to one another if at all possible, so that a fix in either location works, and doesn't get overridden or countermanded.
Still, I suppose I should take some satisfaction in once again proving to be the household admin -- after about an hour plus of guessing aimlessly. Not really what we're looking for here. Hope this helps somebody else save time.
Please be very specific - your response " The second method is in the printer driver itself. This is accessed by selectiong "Properties" on the printer, which opens the driver. There you will see selectable preferences." is far too vague. Specifically, which setting in which menu needs to be configured, and what is the setting?
If checking the driver/menu settings using the post above did not resolve the issue, you can also try downloading and installing the UFR printer driver using the link HERE. The issue you are describing can also be caused if you are not using the correct driver for the printer and it is not sending the correct paper size/paper tray information.
The changes would need to be made in the driver. The driver settings for the paper type and paper size will need to be adjusted so they match on both the printer and computer. The original image that started the forum post shows that the print request was setup for letter plain paper, but the tray 1 setting on the printer is set to letter sized recycled paper.
This should be listed as the correct answer, so thanks!
The issue isn't with selecting the proper tray, it's figuring out which paper type the driver is sending to the printer, and making sure the printer tray is configured with the same paper type. I had "Plain Paper" selected in the driver, but had my printer tray configured for paper type 2. I switched the tray to paper type 1, and that solved the problem for me.
I don't know why Canon uses different paper terminology between the driver and the printer. There's nothing telling a user that "Plain Paper" is the same as paper type 1, so that really makes things unnecessarily complicated and frustrating.
BTW - selecting "Auto Select" as the paper type in the driver, with paper type 1 configured in the printer also worked for me, but "Auto Select" in the driver did not work with paper type 2 in the printer.
I have the same issue and I just got this today and set it up. My only thought now is to pack it back up and return this as it is not worth the hassle to deal with. And there is literally no help to resolve the issue from anyone. Also, there are better options out there other than Canon.
I think this issue is a windows issue not a canon issue. I don't have the issue when printing from Ipad it is only my newer windows devices I solved the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling the printer.
Up until the past month or so, my LBP226dw printer functioned flawlessly. Now, I routinely receive error code #099, but can't figure out what's going on. I did a "Initialize all data / settings" reset and went through the set up process. My printer is connected via to my network (via WPS button). I can usually get a Windows Printer Test Page to print, but that's about it.
Thanks for joining the conversation, LeoC4!
So that the Community can help you better, we need to know exactly which version of Windows is running on your computer. That, and any other details you'd like to give will help the Community better understand your issue!

Thanks and have a great day!
Start by removing the device from Printers and Scanners (under settings). Uninstall any Canon related software and applications (programs and Features), then restart your computer. Now run the installation software and follow the prompts to connect your printer to your wireless network and install the drivers windows needs to communicate with the device.
Hi all. I have the Canon LBP226dw. I love it - it's an amazing printer for what I need, but I'm constantly having problems with it. I have AT&T Gigabit internet, and the fiber connection, unfortunately, is in my bedroom closet (I live in an apartment). No other devices have connection issues. The printer is directly beside my computer, connected via WiFi. The printer is always offline - I have to turn it off and back on to print from the computer. I haven't been able to print at all from my iPhone. The phone displays the printer, but if I click on the printer name, it does a search for printers and comes back with the old "Can't find any AirPrint printers" message. I had no issues with that at my house. I could always print from my phone.
So, issue 1 - the printer always goes offline and has to be turned off and back on to print from the computer and issue 2 - I'm unable to print from my iPhone like I used to be able to without issue.
It's very nerve-wracking. The only difference is at the house, the modem and router were on my computer desk, about 10ft from the printer (I had Spectrum there). Here, I just have the AT&T provided modem/router (not bridged/unbridged to use a separate router) and it's about 15ft away in the closet, which I keep the door shut.
I can't figure it out. None of the hardware has changed. Can anyone provide some insight or help? The fiber connection is too short to pull the modem out of the closet so that's a no-go. I have a Bose Soundwave (the really expensive one; theyr'e actually amazing for the size, and I'm an audiophile with gear much more expensive than Bose) out in the living room/kitchen area and it has no issue playing wirelessly. The TV has no issue. It's only the printer, which didn't really have problems at the house.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been through all the articles and tried installing the driver, uninstalling the driver, reinstalling the driver, resetting the printer and reconnecting to the network, power cycling the printer and router, turning wifi off/on on my phone. Only way I can print is to turn the printer off and on again. I don't know how long it takes, but the printer just goes offline.
What will help you. Assign the printer a static IP on your network. I did this on the printers, but in a home environment with only one LAN segement you can do this on your modem/router. Look for MAC address reservation or similar.
Its much easier to configure the printer using its webserver. Using the menu buttons, arrow keys and "OK" can be cumbersome. You can also give the printer a custom host name and mDNS (mobile) device host name. Another handy feature, you can set the amount of time that elapses before the printer sleeps. as well as when it wakes.
I have AT&T fiber at one of my houses. Its bridged and feeds a Netgear Orbi mesh system. I have no idea how good the broadcast is on the modem, but the AT&T software interface is clunky for sure. I tried to use DAC to connect the fiber directly to my Orbi's ethernet without the AT&T modem but it didn't work.
Thanks for the super detailed reply, and thankfully I understand everything you said, lol. Thanks for the LAN IP; I haven't been able to access the modem's web portal because I'm used to 192.168.x.x. Where can I find the broadcast signal strength in the web portal? I'm used to my old Asus' portal. It's showing my printer has 5 bars so it's definitely (and it should be) getting enough signal strength.
I don't think there's a wireless problem because it's clearly working (after I turn it off/on again), but I can't figure out why my phone won't print from it anymore. I didn't have it assigned a static IP at the old house and my phone had no issue printing from it. In fact, I printed from my phone 90% of the time.
I saw some replies for another MF series printer, but the instructions did not make sense to me. I have gone through EVERY possible option in the print dialog boxes. I think this is something set on the printer itself somehow.
THe weird thing is that on my old computer with the same printer, I had an option in the Print dialog box for "Finishing." That allowed me to specify (and obviously I could save that setting in a preset). But, with my new computer and new download of the drivers, etc., "Finishing" is not on the drop down menu. I do see Basic (which someone mentioned in a post), but that doesn't deal with 2 sided printing.
I figured it out but forgot that I had posted this question. The machine default is set to print single-sided. Choosing the first option on the machine will give you single-sided to double-sided, the second option is double-sided to double-sided. This is why I was getting double-sided prints all the time. To get single to single make sure the machine is in the default (reset button)
I just bought a new Canon TS9520. I spent hours trying to get it to stop printing double-sided. I called Canon and the representative said he couldn't help me because I have a Mac with Word on it and he only knows about Mac using Pages. I called Amazon technicans and they couldn't help me. So, I'm about to sadly send the computer back and buy an HP (which I don't wish to buy)
I just tried what you recommended and I was able to get word single-sided. But PDF files are still double-sided. What do you recommend here. I need to send the printer back in a few days if this is not solved so please answer quickly
