The Honorable Junichi Ihara was appointed Consul General of Japan in Los Angeles in April 2008. Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Director-General of the Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau. His recent positions include Minister at the Embassy of Japan in the United States (2004-2006), Director of the Financial Fairs Division (2002-2004), Director of the WTO Division (1999-2002), Director of the First Southeast Asia Division (1997-1999) and Director of the Office of the Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs (1997-1997). Mr. Ihara graduated from Kyoto University, Japan in 1979. He is married and has two children.
How do the disasters in Japan and the ensuing clean-up efforts affect global trade and what does it mean for the rest of the world? Japan is the third largest economy in the world and a top exporter. Have Japan’s major trading partners seen a shortage of goods? The Japanese disaster could affect the U.S. economy in a number of ways, some positive and some negative. Moody’s reports there are six major channels through which the Japanese disaster could affect the U.S. economy: trade, interest rates, commodity prices, equity prices, currency movements and monetary policy.
Free Trade Agreement Workshop
The United States has free trade agreements with many other countries. Each free trade agreement brings with it opportunities for reduced duties and fees and facilitated entry into other markets. However, free trade agreements also have complex rules and increased risks of penalties for non-compliance.
