CEA Initiatives

CEA Continues to Push for Spectrum Allocation
CEA challenged a recent National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) request to examine spectrum hoarding, by issuing the following statement: “NAB is seeking to confuse the U.S. Congress by comparing businesses that have paid large amounts for thin slices of spectrum with broadcasters who did not pay for broad swathes of the most desirable spectrum and who are sitting on underused spectrum loaned to them by government. The fast growth in wireless video requires that we repurpose underused spectrum.”

Also, in conjunction with CTIA – The Wireless Association®, CEA submitted a white paper to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) demonstrating that the auction of 120 MHz of underutilized broadcast television spectrum will produce more than $33 billion in net proceeds for the U.S. Treasury. In addition to providing the U.S. government with deficit-offsetting revenue, such an auction will also fulfill the vision of the FCC’s National Broadband Plan for continued wireless innovation and U.S. technology leadership. Read the white paper, or contact Michael Petricone for more information.

CEA Proposes Safeguards to Limit Child Access to Lithium Batteries
CEA’s Product Safety Working Group has submitted a proposal to Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent safety certification organization, to prevent access by children to lithium coin- and button-cell batteries in CE devices. The proposal consists of two safeguards to keep children from accessing lithium batteries in CE products: (1) guidelines for how products are constructed; and (2) a user warning. The product construction guidelines give manufacturers flexibility in design while requiring mechanical testing to demonstrate that the battery will not be accessible under normal use conditions. CEA continues to be a leader in developing and proposing innovative, market-driven solutions to ensure CE product safety. For more information, please contact Megan Hayes.

CEA Begins Standards Process for 3D Glasses

CEA announced the launch of a new standards process for 3D glasses. CEA seeks proposals for standardizing 3D active eyewear that uses an infrared (IR) synchronized interface from CE manufacturers. Interested participants are encouraged to join the 3D Technologies Working Group, R4WG16. The expanding presence of 3DTV in the home makes the need for interoperable 3D glasses more urgent than ever. As the hub of technology industry innovation, CEA is the logical host for such a crucial effort. Industry participation will help meet consumer demand and expectations regarding 3D interoperability in the home. R4WG16 requests that interested parties in the CE industry download the formal Active Eyewear Standards IR Sync Request for Proposal (RFP), and return it to Alayne Bell by 5 p.m. EST, March 31, 2011.

Your SmartPhone – Now There’s an ETF for That
Smartphones continue to grab global headlines. News of the Verizon/Apple iPhone announcement ruled broadcasts for weeks, sending both companies’ stocks higher. In order to capture the performance of this growing sector, First Trust Portfolios, NASDAQ OMX and CEA worked to create the first exchange traded fund (ETF) designed to track the performance of the NASDAQ OMX CEA Smartphone Index (QFON). The First Trust Smartphone ETF (FONE) tracks 72 companies globally, including HTC, AT&T, China Mobile, Google Inc., LG Electronics, Samsung, Apple and Verizon. QFON is designed to deliver the performance of companies engaged in the smartphone segment of the telecom and technology sectors. The index includes companies primarily involved in the building and design of handsets, hardware, software and mobile networks associated with the development, sale and usage of smartphones. View all of the companies in this Index, and check out the fact sheet and the investor guide for the Fund.
