- Movie piracy isn't just Hollywood's problem, MPAA's Dodd says
Those who view stolen or pirated movies are shortchanging the entire film industry and are contributing to an ongoing "American problem," according to Chris Dodd in his first speech as chief executive officer of the Motion Picture Association of America. "I am deeply concerned that too many people see movie theft as a victimless crime," the former U.S. senator from Connecticut said. "It is critical that we aggressively educate people to understand that movie theft is not just a Hollywood problem. It is an American problem." Home Media Magazine

- Sony's Crackle expands to various CE devices
Crackle, the digital video platform owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, has started offering full-length, ad-supported movies and TV shows on various Sony-manufactured consumer-electronics devices and other products. The offering involves devices such as the company's PlayStation 3 video game console and Bravia HDTVs. Crackle also will be available on Blu-ray players and the Roku content-streaming machines. - Report: Smartphone demand to remain strong in 2011
Smartphone unit sales will grow by nearly 50% worldwide this year, compared with 74% in 2010, according to a report from the IDC research firm, which pinned 2010 as an unusually strong year because of "pent-up demand" coming out of the recession. IDC also predicts that Windows Phone 7 will ride on Nokia's back to surpass Apple and BlackBerry in global market share by 2015. The Wall Street Journal

- Researchers create nanogenerators to harness human energy
Researchers are using nanotechnology to develop minuscule generators that can capture the energy from slight human movements such as the beating of a heart or the flick of a finger to power consumer-electronics devices such as iPods. "This development represents a milestone toward producing portable electronics that can be powered by body movements without the use of batteries or electrical outlets," said Zhong Lin Wang of the Georgia Institute of Technology. - Netflix tweaks data loads for Canadian customers
Netflix has cut the amount of data it uses for its streaming service in Canada by two-thirds with minimal changes to video quality, the company said. The move comes in response to most Canadian Internet service providers' policies of metering Internet use and capping monthly use at 20 to 60 gigabytes. Reuters
