- Smartphone owners decide bigger is better, study finds
Smartphones with larger screens -- those measuring 4 inches or more -- have significantly increased in popularity and accounted for 24% of the total market in the U.S. at the end of 2010, according to a study from The NPD Group. Interest in phones with screens that are between 3.5 inches and 3.9 inches increased just 2% in the fourth quarter of last year compared with 2009 figures. MediaPost Communications/Online Media Daily

- Tech stalwarts create next-generation standards-setting group
A group of tech vendors that includes telecoms and search engine leaders has launched an open-source standards-development organization that promises sweeping changes in the way networks are deployed and maintained. The Open Networking Foundation, which counts Microsoft and Google among its members, will build on technologies first developed at Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley, that it says will lead to more intelligent networks, along with added security and greater flexibility. - Groups warn against bogus communications cables
The Communications Cable and Connectivity Association and the Copper Development Association are speaking out against the practice of selling Category 5e and Category 6 communications cables made with copper-clad aluminum conductors instead of solid copper conductors. These cables, the groups contend, run afoul of several industry safety standards and legally cannot be installed in certain areas of buildings. CEPro.com

CEA seeks proposals for IR-based 3D Active Eyewear Standard
CEA's Video Systems Committee is seeking proposals for a standardized IR-based 3D display/active eyewear synchronization interface. R4 WG16 has been tasked with developing a standard for 3D active eyewear. Its efforts will likely result in a new standard called CEA-2038, IR-Synchronized Active Eyewear Standard. Companies wishing to submit proposals must complete the official Request for Proposals form and return it to Alayne Bell by 5 p.m. Eastern time March 31.
