Hey Vishal,

It's great to hear about your interest in Privly.

To start with, you can check out the issues with the current Android Repository. Privly requires atleast one pull request to be able to consider your application.

We can discuss more about this on the irc channel.

Regards.

Hi,

I am Vishal Pathik Gupta, and I am very much looking forward to applying for GSOC 2014 in Privly Foundation. I am in my 4th year in PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore. I am an open source enthusiast, and I am currently lead two groups Student Nokia Developer and a open source group (PES Open Source Community) in my college. I started developing mobile apps 3 years back for Nokia mobiles. The first app I did was a mobile game, Ticklebee, for Nokia N8, C7 and later phones which got more than 150,000 downloads in 3 months. I also have been working with different kinds of content management software like Drupal, and Wordpress, since my first year, have used it to deploy websites. After using these frameworks, I have gained knowledge in Javascript, HTML, PHP and MySQL as well.

The above background, has made me really interested to work in the listed project - Develop Mobile Version of Privly for Android. I wanted to know what exactly are the expectations and a little more details about the project. It could really help me understand the project and write a sound proposal for the same. If there are very limited slots and if android has enough applicants, even though I don't have any prior experience on iOS I can try working with it, I feel I am a quick learner and I will be able to make myself familiar with the development environment in a very short time.

I could go on but would stop here valuing your precious time. I am very passionate about working on this project and I am really looking forward to support it even after completion.

I also wanted you to know, that this is my third attempt to apply to GSoC and my repeated attempts is just a realization that this is the right organization for me and I hope things work out this summer.

Looking forwards to hearing from you,

  Thanks & Regards,

   Vishal Pathik Gupta

Hi Vishal,

Good luck with your application!

The experience you listed doesn’t shine much with regard to Android and iOS. Maybe Sean and Sanchit would be open to a Nokia version? :)

If not, I believe that what matters most is for you to show Privly that you can indeed pick up things quickly and contribute significantly to the project you’ll be choosing within the given time.

The best way to show how promising you are is, as Shivam said, to fork and build the apps, and fix issues.
The more issues you can fix by the application deadline (and given that your code is “good enough”), the more likely you are to be selected!

Another important point Sean and Sanchit can help you with is to build as realistic and accurate a timeline as you can.

Best,
Hery

Vishal,

If you want to do mobile in summer 2014, it has to be one of the
existing apps. If you can get through a pull request on either the
android or the ios apps, then I think you could do well based off your
other mobile experience. The key is to move quickly because you need
to get writing on your GSoC application before the deadline so we can
iterate on your proposal.

Please note: we prefer public communication for all planning since it
allow more people to contribute to the process.

Best,
Sean

Hi Sean & Shivam,

Sorry for the delay in the pull request, I was having some network issues earlier.
I have done a pull request for the listed bug, Kindly review it and suggest what I should take as the next steps going forward.

Thanks for all the help!

Regards
Vishal

Hi Sean & Shivam,

Sorry for too many mails, but I just wanted to get a sense of what are the expectations from this android app project?
What are the rough deliverables? If you can please answer these questions I can start writing my proposal and can get it reviewed by the core community contributors.

Looking forward for a positive reply!

Thanks and Regards
Vishal Pathik Gupta

I think you chatted with Shivam on IRC, do any questions remain at this point?
