Can I use DB18B2O Dallas temperature sensor for the tutorial: http://projects.privateeyepi.com/home/home-alarm-system-project/wireless-projects/construct-wireless-sensor-case-kit

Should I just connect sensory directly to PCB as described in step 4 in above tutorial or sensor needs to be powered through separate battery?

Yes you can but you need to upload DS18B20 firmware onto the wireless module (or we can do that for you if you make a note when ordering it).

Here is the tutorial on how to load new firmware to a wireless module:

There are two other wireless sensor options for the DS18B20:

Wireless temperature and humidity sensor that uses the DHT22:

And another option for a wireless DS18B20 if you are familiar with developing using an Arduino is the RFu-328 which is a wireless Arduino UNO:

Cool. Since I already ordered transmitter, I am trying to program it but I am stuck at waking up sensor while following http://projects.privateeyepi.com/home/home-alarm-system-project/wireless-projects/wake-up-an-rf-sensor
Once I run "python miniterm.py /dev/ttyAMA0", its stuck and I can't send awake command.

root@xx:/usr/bin# python miniterm.py /dev/ttyAMA0
--- Miniterm on /dev/ttyAMA0: 9600,8,N,1 ---
--- Quit: Ctrl+]  |  Menu: Ctrl+T | Help: Ctrl+T followed by Ctrl+H ---

--- Settings: /dev/ttyAMA0  9600,8,N,1
--- RTS active
--- DTR active
--- BREAK inactive
--- software flow control inactive
--- hardware flow control inactive
--- data escaping: raw
--- linefeed: CR/LF
--- CTS: active  DSR: inactive  RI: inactive  CD: inactive

Need some more detail to help you:

Could you elaborate on what you mean by " its stuck"?

Do you have base station receiver connected to the Pi?

Do you see the axxSTARTED-- signals from the sensor when it is powered up?

Did you ground pin 6?

Thanks

I'm planning to do the same thing, but I'd like to start on a breadboard first. Can I install everything on my breadboard update the wireless transmitter, then setup the probe ?

Any advice for the power, can I still use a cr2032 battery with a breadboard ?

Sorry for all the questions still a newbie!! ;)

Hi Eric,

Please let me know what hardware you have (is the XRF and Coin Cell Board?). The DS18B20 firmware does not have sleep mode so CR2032 is no advisable as it will run down in 20 mins.

Hello,

I have the XRF. Do you have an alternative idea instead of the DS18B20.

Thanks!

Yes, The best sensor is to use a 10 k thermistor. Or use this sensor:
