Keynote: Standardizing Design and Manufacturing Across the Supply Chain Presented by Sid Venkatesh, Associate Technical Fellow, Boeing Most large scale manufacturing organizations like Boeing have altered their business model towards more subcontracting, and transfer of design and manufacturing responsibilities to a global supply chain. Sid will the discuss the growing importance of design and manufacturing standardization in response to this shift, and how it affects automation technology choices at manufacturing companies across the supply chain. |
9:00 – 9:40 am | Keynote: PLC Lifecycle Management Presented by Chris Wells, ExxonMobil Programmable Logic Controllers are used widely at petrochemical sites and play a critical role in unit safety and reliability. These devices also present challenges in terms of lifecycle management and security. This presentation will explore those challenges and describe improvements needed to better provide for device management. |
9:45 – 10:25 am | Keynote: Impacts of the Food Safety Modernization Act Presented by David Acheson, Managing Director, Leavitt Partners LLC A former FDA director, Dr. Acheson will talk about coming changes to the Food Safety Modernization Act and other regulatory issues, with an eye toward how they will impact food and beverage processors and packagers, other producers of consumables, and the manufacturers who design and build equipment used in those industries. |

Track session: Leveraging Controls Technology to Achieve Rapid Changeover Presented by Rick Lidington, CEO, FMS Packaging Systems, Inc. Winston Strachan, Maintenance Engineer, Caribbean Food Delights When Caribbean Food Delights set about the task of bringing a whole new level of automation to the flow-wrapping, collating, and cartoning of its unique Caribbean-style patties, high on the list of objectives was quick-changeover. The robotic line that the firm ultimately developed delivers precisely the push-button, menu-driven changeover the firm wanted – and so much more. Learn all the project details, first-hand, from Caribbean Foods and their machine builder partner, FMS Packaging. Or choose to attend our packaging standards Workshop, from 1:00 - 5:30 pm on Tuesday, with a break at 3:00 pm. See Workshop details. Make2Pack and Connect-and-Pack Workshop |
2:00 – 2:55 pm | Track session: Automation in Secondary Packaging and End-of-Line Operations Presented by Steve Stegora, Western Region Sales Manager / Marketing Director – Americas, Langen Packaging Group The packaging equipment industry has been utilizing robotic automation in conjunction with fixed automation for over a quarter of a century. This presentation reviews a broad variety of automation solutions implemented for Secondary Packaging and End of Line Automation to increase operational efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs. An analysis of industries, equipment technologies and project considerations will be reviewed during this video rich presentation. Make2Pack and Connect-and-Pack Workshop |

3:30 – 4:25 pm | Track session: Streamlining Label Procurement With Automation Presented by Christina Mavity, Director of Technical Services, Gilchrist & Soames Faced with a serious case of SKU proliferation, Gilchrist & Soames turned to a Web-based automated system from label converter WS Packaging Group. Called WebFlex, it's an automated artwork and order management system for labels that makes it possible to upload label artwork directly to a server without having to use a third-party FTP site or send art on a disc by overnight carrier or clog email with big files. Mavity will describe the benefits of this Web-based solution, which she describes as a classic example of how to use automation tools to streamline the packaging procurement portion of a complex manufacturing operation. 4:30 – 5:25 pm | Track session: Research into Machine Vision Applications in Packaging Presented by Akram Hossain, Professor, Purdue University Calumet This presentation will discuss the results of using high speed camera vision system in two specific industrial applications. The first application explains how the camera was used to fix the orientation of packaged material, in this case bottles, due to inaccurate cam profile of the screw conveyor. This screw conveyer operates at a very high speed, 500 bottles per minute. Due to inaccurate cam profile of the screw conveyer, 5% to 10% of bottles come out with wrong orientation. It is shown how the installation of high speed camera vision system, allowing capturing of 1000 frames per second of the orientation process, and frame-by-frame analysis of the operation, guide the investigators to find a solution to the inaccuracy in the orientation process.
