Whenvisiting Suwon, the two filming locations were right next to Hwaseong Fortress (수원 화성). This cultural site was built in 1794-1796 by King Joseon in honor of his father, Prince Sado who was locked alive in a rice chest by his father, King Yeongjo after failing to obey a command to commit suicide. During this journey, not only was I able to go on a K-drama expedition, I also took the opportunity to walk around each part of the fortress and learn how this site had a historical and cultural significance impact.
One last thing, never be afraid to ask others to take pictures of you or even record! There were so many people that I've met and they were so nice! (They were even great photographers themselves). For a tip, if there's no one around to help take a photo, don't be afraid to set up your phone on the ground! (I always carry a water bottle on me to set my phone up against it ㅋㅋㅋㅋ).
If you walk around the park, you will see the famous old trees used in the scene. The beautiful red building with the steeple is on the back end of the park, just down the road from True Grit Cafe (a must-see, great food). That red building is the old firehouse. Also, take time to look at the building to the left of the True Grit Cafe, and notice it is the Fort Smith Saloon, also used in the movie.
Some of the scenes that showed Rooster in court were shot in the Ouray County Courthouse, and some of the courthouse scenes were built sets. I did find the staircase that Mattie chased Rooster on, and it was indeed in the Ouray County Courthouse. From Ridgway, take Highway 550 10 miles to Ouray. The courthouse is on the left side of the main street. Turn left on 6th street, then turn right onto 4th street and the courthouse will be on your left. If you go inside, the staircase is on your right.
The ferry scenes were filmed over at Blue Mesa Reservoir, which is between Montrose and Gunnison. The actual locations are now under water, but you can see the rocky cliffs that were shown in the movie.
The most amazing time of year to visit these locations is the last week of September. The aspens are at their peak colors and are simply stunning. On your way from Ridgway to Last Dollar Road and Horsefly Mesa, you have to stop at the Dallas Divide, a very picturesque area that shows the San Juan Mountains in all their autumn glory. Another great time to visit is mid-July, when the wildflowers are blazing. The San Juan Mountains played a vital role in the movie for good reason: they are one of the most beautiful places on earth!
Hello and thank you for a very interesting blog regarding True Grit. I am blessed to have been coming to Ouray for many many years. I am fortunate enough to have been able to visit the snake pit also. The road is now blocked but you can hike to the snake pit scene.
Thanks for all the information and location sites.
We lived in ridgeway and Montrose. We both worked at the local motel the cast stayed in during filming, including John Wayne. We are going out there in July for a vacation and excited to visit the scenes!
Great movie which I have been watching fifth time tonight. The shootout cabin was located on Hot Creek near Mammoth Lakes California where I worked on geothermal mapping. I been right there on Hot Creek soaking in the hot water with my wife and kid.
Great web site for my favorite movie which I watched again tonight for fifth time. The shootout cabin was on Hot Creek in the caldera at Mammoth Lake CA. Have camped with wife in the meadow below Chimney Rock at Owl Creek Pass where Duke shot it out with Ned gang.
Hi! Montrose is about 4.5-5 hours from Colorado Springs, and Denver is 1 hour from Colorado Springs, so plan on 5.5-6.5 hours, depending on weather conditions ? And I would whole-heartedly agree that the San Juan Mountains are the most beautiful part of Colorado!
Having visited Old Tucson Studios just outside of Tucson Arizona. Not only do they claim to have filmed parts of the movie in that old west town studio, but they actually show you parts of the movie that were filmed there.
Thank you so much! I received an invitation due to my videos but was unable to attend that weekend, sadly. I hope I can go next year. Thank you so much for thinking to mention that to me, I appreciate it.
After seeing the Twilight sites in St. Helens, Oregon we retraced our path up to the Lewis and Clark Bridge and crossed back into Washington. Bridges across the Columbia are few and far between, and after doing some research I found that is was indeed faster to double back 30-ish minutes to cross the Columbia River the same way we came to continue to Portland. An added bonus, Kalama High School, used for the outside scenes of Forks High School, was an easy stop right on the way.
Now mid-afternoon, we had enjoyed seeing the sites, but were ready to head to the last destination on our list, and one of our favorite places to visit: Cannon Beach. Located an hour and a half from Portland, Canon Beach is beautiful, relaxing and a welcome way to wrap up our Twilight Road Trip. We pulled up next to the lovely Ocean Lodge at Cannon Beach where we were staying and soaked in the fresh salt air, warm sunshine and incredible views.

This section is primarily constructed from information and photos sent in by Bill Peterson after his August '03 Fandango road trip (thanks Bill!). There's also a great site detailing the Fandango movie locations at
www.central70.org/Fandango/Sites.html, including location maps.
Bill Peterson:A couple of internet posts suggest that the frat house and restroom scenes where shot on a set built in an abandoned school in Toyah, Texas. I stopped by to check it out. The building is easily the biggest building in Toyah, and it must have been quite beautiful in its' day. The building obviously has not been used in a long time, and it is dilapidated and with all of the doors and windows boarded. I ignored the "posted - no trespassing" sign, and managed to squeeze through a crack in the plywood to explore the basement.
It was pretty creepy, with remnants of several dead animals scattered around in the dark rooms. There was a staircase leading up to the first and second levels, but it was dark up there so I chickened out. So, anyone with a good flashlight and a sense of adventure can go check it out. I tried to learn more about the school, but I literally could not find one person in the city. It really is a ghost town. A Toyah website indicated that the second floor of the school was converted to a gym in the 1960's - I bet the sets were located there. The school is located on the Northern side of town - you can't miss it. GPS coordinates: N31 19.000', W103 47.569'.
Jerry Bandy, Watauga, Texas: I visited a web site about Toyah, Texas and came across a picture of an abandoned school that may have been used as a set in Fandango. It was listed that the only sets were for the bathroom scene and the frat party scene. The picture was taken by Jason Penney. The website is
www.texasescapes.com/TOWNS/Toyah_Texas/Toyah_Texas.htm (scroll down to 'Toyah Elementary and High School').
Man it's amazing what some of these old folks remember.....the architect and builder was Albert Bruce. The schools in Pyote and Royalty are supposed to be exactly the same as Toyah's and designed and built by him. The lady that knew this was a granddaughter of Albert Bruce.
Buzz: We made it to the site of the McLean Massacre. We got there after dark, but got a photo of me and one of my daughters standing next to the marker. It is nothing like the one in the movie. It also is in a completely different location than shown in Fandango. This marker was beside a two-lane, paved county road, in the piney woods of east Texas, about 10 feet off the road in someone's front yard. The piney woods is an area of rolling hills forested with very tall pine trees and dense underbrush. This makes me wonder a few things:
Alex: Unfortunately I have no contact info for Kevin Reynolds (I've no idea if he is on the web or knows of this site's existence), but I shall forward your mail to Chuck in case he has any info...
Tim Parsons (El Chango Borracho Studios): There seems to be a lot of controversy on your site concerning just where the Sonic is located. Let me clear that up: it's the Sonic in Alpine, TX. My older brother, Brent and his girlfriend (and future wife), Laura were extras on "Fandango" for this scene. Laura was picked to get in a car and make out with another extra. My brother, who was also there as an extra, stepped up and let it be known that if anyone was going to be making out with Laura, it had better be him, her boyfriend. Exceptions were made, and, you guessed it, Brent and Laura are the couple making out in the car that Dorman is stealing fries from in the film. They now live outside of Austin and show the video to their kids as "mom and dad's romantic film debut". They will get a kick out your site and especially some long overdue, um, "acting credit"...
