TAKING ROOT:
THE VISION OF WANGARI MAATHAI
In 2004 Wangari Maathai became the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
“Taking Root” tells the dramatic story of this charismatic woman whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights and defend democracy, and for this Maathai became an iconic inspiration. In the 1970s she founded the Green Belt Movement in Kenya, organizing women to plant trees and learn about conservation. Later men joined. Initially the Kenyan government perceived the Movement as a threat and Maathai and many women were jailed and sometimes assaulted. In 2003 she was elected to Parliament and served as Minister for Environment and Natural Resources. In 2011 she passed away at age 71.
80 minutes. Directed by Lisa Merton and Alan Dater/Marlboro Productions
