Princeton Soccer Update - June 2014
Women's Soccer
We wrapped up the spring season with strong showings against both Seton Hall and Rutgers. Thanks to the generosity of our Friends of Princeton Soccer, we were also able to make an amazing trip to Paris this past March to play, sightsee and perform some community
service events. More details about our trip can be found
here.
The team nominated rising seniors Lauren Lazo '15 (Scottsdale, AZ) and Gabrielle Ragazzo '15 (Jacksonville, FL) as co-captains for the upcoming season. While the Class of 2014 leaves the FitzRandolph gates, the Class of 2018 makes its way to Ole' Nassau in
a couple of months. We have nine student-athletes joining the team, and you can get a glimpse of their bios
here.
Assistant Coach Esmeralda Negron '05 and I, along with current and former players Sara Chehrehsa '12, Alison Nabatoff '13, Claire Pinciaro '13, Rebecca Shmoys '13, Fiona McKenna '17 and Jesse McDonough '17 all attended the Chicago Red Stars vs Sky Blue game
in Piscataway, NJ, on May 28 to watch Jen Hoy '13 in her second season in the NWSL (National Women's Soccer League). She continues to score goals and has been in with the U-23 National team the past year. We are thrilled about her
success.
On Thursday of the same week, two of our seniors, Gabriella (Gabby) Guzman and Diane Metcalf-Leggette took on major roles at the Princeton Varsity Club Senior Awards Banquet. Gabby was asked to be the speaker on behalf of all the senior women athletes. She
did an incredible job in her usually enthusiastic humorous way, giving credit to all and motivating all of the seniors to continue to make their mark. Diane was given the Art Lane '34 Award, awarded to an undergraduate athlete in recognition of his or her
selfless contribution to sport and society. Diane started an organization called Goals Beyond the Net, a nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the lives of children living in extreme poverty in Haiti.

We had our Alumni Game & Reception during the Friday of Reunions...it was the first time we held the event, and we had about 35 alums play and/or stop by to catch up. It was great to see everyone and a nice kick-off to Reunions weekend.
Our five seniors, Cecilia DiCaprio, Gabriella Guzman, Kacie Kergides, Diane Metcalf-Leggette, and Erika Hoglund graduated on Tuesday, June 2. All of them are gainfully employed for the upcoming year. Cece will be a AmeriCorps Member with City Year in Denver,
CO, a program that works to keep high risk kids on track to graduate high school. Gabriella will be a Research Assistant at the Columbia Center for Eating Disorders at Columbia University Medical Center. Kacie will be starting an internship with Relevant Sports,
headed up by men's soccer alum Charlie Stillitano '81. Diane will be working as a Consultant for ISNetworld in Dallas, Texas, and Erika will be teaching at Guangzhou True Light High School in China.
Men's Soccer
It was great seeing so many alumni and friends at the Men's Soccer annual Reunions Alumni Game on Saturday, May 31st as the odd years pulled off a come from behind 5-4 win. Thanks to all of you who came out to play or to catch up with friends and teammates.
At the post-game reception, Stephen "Seabass" Finger '99 informed everyone he was diagnosed with ALS in 2013 and his focus is on increasing awareness about ALS and working for a cure. For more information about Stephen's fight and a World Cup Viewing Party
in NYC on June 22nd to support the cause, contact Matt Kinsey '98 at
mrki...@princeton.edu.
Also participating in the alumni game was Dr. Harold Fernandez '89, who recently published a book documenting his unique journey to Princeton and Harvard on the way to becoming a successful heart surgeon. The book is titled
Undocumented and was published in 2012 by Tate Publishing, LLC.
Assistant Coach Jesse Marsch '96 also participated in the alumni game, playing for both the even and odd years. For those of you interested in following World Cup news this summer, look for Jesse's podcasts on
www.mlssoccer.com under the link "Road to Brazil."
Congratulations to Princeton Soccer's class of 2014, who participated in the commencement ceremony and officially graduated on Tuesday, June 3rd. We wish all the best to our newest alumni - Chris Benedict, Dylan Bowman, Seth MacMillan, Billy McGuinness, Andrew
Menendez, Pat O'Neil, and Brady Valashinas.

As the World Cup beings,
two documentaries are being released, chronicling former Princeton Coach Bob Bradley '80's time as the
Coach of Egypt's National Team.
One will air on PBS on June 16th at 10pm ET. The other is entitled "We Must Go" and is available for purchase on iTunes at the following link:

The Special Olympics are coming to Princeton University. Princeton University is the host site for the 2014 Special Olympic USA Games from
June 16th-20th for Swimming and Track.
On Monday, June 16th, the soccer showcase of the Special Olympics will be held at Mercer County Park from 6:30 - 9:30pm. There will be a "March to the Match" parade of athletes, led by a marching band, honored guests, and local youth soccer programs followed
by unified competition and a unity match. Current and/or former players who would like to participate in the march as well as possibly work with some of the athletes in skills demonstrations and exhibitions are welcome. The competition will last Monday-Friday.
If you are interested in learning more about getting involved, please feel free to contact Coach Barlow at
jimb...@princeton.edu for more information.
Here are links to the 2014
men's soccer schedule and the
women's soccer schedule.
We hope everyone has a great summer! The women's program will be hosting an Elite Residential Camp July 20-23. We are excited to be working with our new Ford Family Director of Athletics, Mollie Marcoux '91, who is a former soccer and ice hockey player at Princeton.
We wish Gary Walters '67 the best of luck and thank him for all of his support over the years.
We hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy the World Cup, and we'll see you at a game this fall.
Sincerely,
Julie Shackford and Jim Barlow '91
