All,

PrinceCon 42 will be using the D&D 5th edition core rules. We will
still provide a "Con Book" but it will be radically smaller and just
describe the world and allowed races and rollup options and other
details.

We'll expect everyone to either bring their own D&D Player's Handbook,
or buy one at a discount during registration.

The PrinceCon GMs have been playing 5th edition since the summer, and
while every game has its quirks, it seems like it will work fine for
the convention. Most importantly, it will still allow us to run the
games we want to run, in the worlds we want to run in. Plus, it has
the advantages that we'll be using a stable, well-tested system every
year, and the rule book you use is much more likely to see actual use
during the rest of the year.

So, if 5e is new to you, check out a game at your Friendly Local Game
Store, or else we'll have experts on hand to get you up to speed at
the con!

Thanks,
Aaron

P.S. Theme details will be coming out as the con gets closer.

Do you need to have a count of the number of people who are buying books there?
And, do you have a rough idea what "at a discount" would look like quantitatively?
I've got to decide whether to brave the icy winds to go out and get one (is 5th ed. in bookstores?), order online and hope it gets here in time, or get it from you.  More details would be lovely in making that decision.

Thanks,
Greg

The list price for the Player's Handbook is $50.  We will charge $40.  You
can get it from Amazon for $30.  Not sure what the FLGS might charge.  The
local game stores that carry RPGs and the Barnes and Noble stores I've been
to have all had it.  It's up to you -- same book whatever way you pick.  :)

If you do order it through us, it would be helpful if you pre-register and
order it as part of your registration -- not only will you save $5 on the
registration, but also it will help us to have the count of how many books
are needed.

Thanks,

Perfect. I got the registration link yesterday and did all that.  I'm told I should also have received a character creation link (some of my group members have already) but I haven't seen it yet.  I'll assume unless I hear otherwise that's just a normal processing delay.

I also haven't seen the "theme details" mentioned earlier, has that come out someplace other than this group where I've missed it?

Thanks,
Greg

There's some theme info on the page here:

And additional bits in the con book (besides the intro, mainly in the descriptions of the Origins and Backgrounds):
