Prof. Balasubramaniam was a very good researcher and a nicest human being I have ever come across. He was very sympathetic and cordial to even an unknown person. In this hour of grief, I wish my deep condolence to his family and pray God to leave his soul at a heavenly place.

I was shocked upon hearing the news of his untimely demise. Though I never had the fortune of sitting in his class, but I had heard so much about him from friends, that I could easily imagine him as one of the best teachers and researchers of the Institute. May the Almighty rest his noble soul in peace and give strength to his family in this hour of grief.

Few people in this campus have managed to rise above the daily rut that is campus life, and have managed to distinguish themselves as exemplary human beings. Prof. Balasubramaniam was one of those rare people. An excellent scientist, teacher, musician and the archetypical nice guy to scores of people both in and outside the campus, he will be sorely missed by everyone whose lives he touched in so many different ways. Today is indeed a sad day for IIT Kanpur. My deepest condolences to his family, students and friends.

I was terribly pained to hear of the tragic demise of our dear, beloved Prof.Balasubramaniam. I will forever remember fondly his ever cheerful attitude towards life and child-like enthusiasm with which he brought alive even the most boring of lectures. I will never forget the day he walked into the class holding a sword in his hand and told us with great joy of the triumphs of out ancient rulers. I think that incident symbolises for me, that he lives on like a warrior. I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family and pray that they have all the courage to cope with this trsgedy.

I am shocked to listen his untimely demise. Although I am not from his department but I was lucky enough to be present in his two seminars on history of metallurgy in India. I feel those seminars as some of the bests I have had in my tenure at IIT K. Apart from his excellent research career, he was a vibrant person with a lot of humorous gesture. His performance in one Musical Extravazanga in auditorium was indicative of his other calibre. We have lost one good teacher, excellent orator as well as one good human being. I pray Almighty God to give enough strength to his family members to overcome this situation. May his soul rest in peace.

My sadness runs very deep, we are faced with an irreplaceable loss. We have lost an amazing personality, a great teacher, and one of the best speakers I have ever seen. I had the fortune of attending his class. His love of materials - past, present and future was a deep source of inspiration to me. He tried to understand the past...with the past he lives on. The shock is too great. My heartfelt condolences to the family and friends.Barath

I am still in shock after knowing this sad and devastating news. He was the best researcher, educator, orator, highly energetic and above all a nice and humble human being. I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to do research with him, which completely changed the direction of my life. I lost my best guru.....I pray to god that his soul will remain in peace.

It would be very hard to realise that Bala sir is nore more among us.I could not imagine what his family must be going through when we ourselves are so much in shock.I pray that God gives strength to his family to bear the grief and pain.Sir we will miss you always.

Bala and I were class mates at BHU from 1979-84. Besides showing up on the same train from Chennai on our first day at BHU, through numerous days & nights, the next five years bala shared his dorm, notes and life itself with our batchmates and me. He emerged as a leader be it his academic performance, cultural contributions or drumming, cricket and of course metallurgy as a topper. His return to IITK and metallurgical research in India, his recent publications and books, his love for teaching and students all made Bala a very special human being. Our whole class was looking to see him at BHU this Christmas. Alas it as not to be. My love to his daughters and heartfelt condolences to the family.

Untimely demise of Bala sir has not only caused an irreparable loss to IIT Kanpur and Materials Science Community but we have lost one of the best teachers and a kind human being. May his soul rest in peace.

It is really a shocking news. We lost an excellent person with incredible teaching and research skills. He had been the darling of many of the students. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Manoj

I feel a mix of disbelief and shock at his untimely demise. He was one such teacher who had his mark on even the laziest of us in the class from Day 1. Always full of enthusiasm and inspiring to be larger than life. An ardent patriot, who always inspired students by his example to rise above mediocre things. I remember most of us were always stuck in awe while he used to speak. An ace expert in his field, great sense of humour and a passionate drummer, what a man!I earnestly hope that God gives strength to the bereaved family and leave them with only the cherished memories with Bala Sir.

I am what I am today only because of him. He is the person who motivated me and gave me strength at all times to go ahead in the right direction. The right way to pay tribute to him is take this boldly and go ahead and do a good job as his student and carry forward his legacy. We all miss you Bala Sir. India has lost a great scientist, an awesome teacher and an extraordinary human being. May his soul rest in peace.

Bala, we will always miss you. Right now I am unable to think whatelse I could do except sharing the sense of great personal loss, shock andgrief with the rest of the IITK community. Bala always exhibited extra bitof life in whatever he did and had the rare capacity to instill some ofthat in others he met. I will cherish for the rest of my life the fondmemories of being together with Bala in the first REACH symposium, innumerable cricket matches and for that matter anywhere and everywhere inthe campus. I met him the very first day he joined us and consider myselflucky to have had a colleague and friend like Bala. - Asok

Bala was a good friend. He was always dynamic and cheerful. We worked together on several issues. He was a role model on the professional front. I would miss him very much. My heartfelt condolences to his family.

We are shocked to hear the sad demise of Prof bala who was a great teacher. His contribution on indian ancient metallurgy will remain for ever. We pray god for giving enough strength to his family member to bear this loss.

If one of the gems is detached from the group of alikes, the entire garland gets disbursed.Mr. Balasubramaniam was not only the pillar of the storey of academics but also a guide with a persona to be followed.May his soul rest in peace and God grant strength to the members of the berieved family . Paying the last homage to a great academician.

Professor Bala was one of the best teachers, mentor, and guide. He used to inspire awe and respect in each and everyone of us. I truly cherish the time spent in his classes and the life-changing advice which he used to give. His words have remained with me always and helped me in the most difficult times. Prof Bala will always live in our heart as the most stunning member of the IITK family.

Bala was simply full of life! I am sure his vivacity will inspire all of us who had the privilage of his association. His enthralling drums will continue to reverberate in the campus and give us energy and ethusiasm to work and play with the effervescent style....that was Balas way. May he rest in peace.

Bala was great in all areas: human being, friend, infectious laughter, sports, research, teachinig, lecturer, author, writer.... His lectures on Cannons of India and on Delhi Iron Pillar were well appreciated by one and all. He had spent time at the Indian Inst of Advanced Studies at Simla and his lectures there were published in a separate volume, a rare honour for any engineer. His other books are also highly sought after. I noticed his name last month in a museum in Delhi where a new and permanent exhibition has been put up on the Indian work over the centuries related to metallurgy. He had brought new discipline of teaching and research at IIT Kanpur. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, associates and the profession.May his soul rest in eternal peace.JP Gupta

I am shocked to hear about the untimely demise of Prof. Bala who has been a true source of inspiration for the students and the entire IITK community. Be it the class, musical extravaganza or conference he was always cheerful uplifting the spirits of all around him. His lectures on introduction to metallurgy supplemented with a historical outlook will be a treasure for the rest of my life. May his soul rest in peace.

Really a shocking and very very very bad news.....Prof.Bala is a student friendly professor and all of us aware Prof.Bala s fans group in orkut. He had so many disciples throught out world and all are respects/loves/likes him like anything. let us pray his soul may rest in peace.
