Not sure if you found the answer to this question, but...... I start my IVIG
in my hands. I have also started one in my foot. One of the veins in my
hand and another in my ankle, above the foot vein I used, got big lumps
about 3 weeks after my IV. I thought it was clots. I had the infusions
nurses at UCLA look at it and they said the the veins scleroses and shut
down in one area, blocking blood flow above and below the stenoses area.
They said it would heal eventually, but could take months. I have a thick
layer of skin over the vein, but I would bet if my skin were thin and you
could see the veins well, it would look dark in the vein.......like vericose
veins, the blood has no where to go. It is unoxygenated blood that was on
it's way back to the heart and appears dark when it is not moving, as in a
stenosed vein. It sounds like this could be what has happened to your
daughters hand. I would definately ask a nurse who is used to IVIG
infusions. IVIG can be hard on veins globally....meaning not just where the
IV was.......but in places even more remote from the infusion site. Often,
it requires giving veins a break to heal to avoid just this sort of problem.
Good luck!
