How do I setup Prey in standalone mode?
I can't find clear instructions for it anywhere.

Is the problem, that I have left check url empty. I was told that, if
I leave it empty, Prey sends email everytime, when it activates, but
it haven't send anything.

There should be clear instructions about How to install and use Prey
standalone mode.

I have already responded to your email. However with hopes of
assisting others, I have approved this message and will paste the copy
of your email bellow.

Email:
Assuming you have windows (I don't recall this email, hence I lack the
details of your OS or setup):

Enter prey's configuration panel (location varies, however it should
be PreyProject/platform/windows/prey-config.exe >> Where
PreyPath=Setup location)

Once inside the configuration panel, select the stand-alone (email
mode) option.

Fill in all required fields. However if using gmail, in the username
field (for the account sending the email), omit the @gmail.com part
(only type in the username of the account).

If using a web server for your stand alone mode, you must look at the
FAQ located at http://preyproject.com/faq for proper setup
instructions.

However, if using the online control panel, the link must follow the
following format:

http://control.preyproject.com/devices/DEVICEKEY.xml

Where the DEVICEKEY= your control panel device key.

Once everything has been configured, save all changes.

Next, log on to the control panel and select the desired reporting
interval (i.e. 20 min), and update the device preferences (using the
"save changes" on the control panel).

Your system should now be configured. If you still experience issues,
please enter the installation location of prey (default c:\\prey) and
please send me your log file.

Best of luck,
Mark

-----------

To tailor my response to this post and not the email you sent me, just
ignore everything after the URL section of my email posting. This will
in effect cause a report to be send to your email once prey runs.

To setup the reporting interval without the online control panel,
please go to PreyProject/platform/windows/prey-config.exe >> Where
PreyPath=Setup location.

Select: Manage prey settings (or something along the lines of:
configure prey reporting method --> I don't recall what it is called--
from the top of my head--and I am away from my computer).

Once there, select the desired delay interval.

Hope this helps,
Mark

the web site is great but it lacks good documentation beside the FAQ.

I have changed the following variable in config file:
post_method='email'
mail_to='my gmail addres'
smtp_username= my gmail address
smtp_password= my gmail password base 64 encoded

and I never receive an email when I test it for an alert
I have checked with wireshark: not a single attempt to send any packet.
So I supect a bug.

I see nothing in console about sending an email or an error. It just locks my screen.

I believe my post above addresses your issue. Please try to follow the
above suggestions.

If I am not mistaken (and as mentioned in my post above), you are
messing up in the: smtp_username field. Try omitting the @gmail.com
(or @______.com).

Even if your using a different OS, try my suggestions above. Honestly
I think your issue is the configuration. Particularly the username
field.

To expedite support please upload a copy of your log file. This will
let us know if you have an installation issue, wifi issue, config
issue, etc. However as mentioned time and time again, try my
suggestion on the username field.

Is prey even running?  Send us the prey.log file, which is written on each execution.

Is there a file at your check URL location?  If so, then your computer is not missing, and you don't expect to get any reports.  How often did you configure prey to check?

Just some ideas for you.

Yes, I have done everything and I still don't get any emails. Does Prey support https? My GMail account is allowing only secured connections.

Once again, please post the prey log.

Https and using ssl for mail are not really the same thing.  Prey standalone does work with my gmail account.  I'm not in a position to verify ssl versus unsecured right now.

If you forward the prey.log file to the list, we can probably help you more.

Where is the Prey log file?

It isn't at /usr/share/prey/
And I have checked every folder there and there isn't any log files.

Now I found that log file:

I think, that it thinks that I'm using control panel, but Prey configurator says, that I'm using standalone mode. When I tried reinstalling, Prey gave message "Your configuration from previous installation has been recovered". Is it possible to do complete reinstall to Prey, without recovering previous settings, which seems to use control panel, which I don't use.

Yes. Uninstall Prey, and then go to the prey system root and delete
the folder (which will have the left over config file). Then reinstall
it. After looking at your log file (the first one, not the check
mode), I think a reinstall is best, before brainstorming another
solution. After all it seems prey is not running properly (nothing to
do with the stmp)-->IMO.
