I just installed Prey on my Mac but its been 8 hours and I see no reports coming in.

Also, I don't see the app anywhere on my mac, shouldn't it show up in my control panel?

Please help!

Sometime your antivirus blocks Prey, check out that first!

I am having the same problem. I just installed Prey on my MacBook Air with OSX Lion, then I activated Prey, toggling 'missing' in the control panel, but after many hours, I have not received any reports at all. When I looked at the log and used check mode in the terminal window, this is what I found:

Roberts-MacBook-Air$ cat /var/log/prey.log

So, I do not understand why I am not getting any reports? I would appreciate your help.
Thanks

Hi,

Thank you for the email. I followed your suggestion, and the computer immediately set off the alarm. I am not sure whether that means the system is now working, or whether by running the shell command, it sent one message. Here is what the terminal printed out:

You are not getting any reports because Prey cannot contact the control panel to find out that it is missing.

It says it got Status Code 500.  A quick web search of HTTP status codes indicates that 500 is “Internal Error 500

The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request.“

Do you have a proxy or other virus/security software that might be blocking the request?

Or perhaps Prey’s servers really are having an internal error, not sure what could be going on there.   It’s possible one of the admins can actually check the logs on that end.

Bottom line, this log says that the computer is not missing “-- Nothing to worry about. :)” so no report is being generated.

There are 2 main functions of Prey -
Reports (aka information to gather)
Actions

Reports are sent when it is marked missing.

Actions run every time Prey runs, so every 20 minutes by default. This is regardless of missing status, once the device has read the settings from the control panel the actions will run until it can read new settings from the CP.

If you are testing Prey just use actions because it is difficult to to tell if the settings are being updated with actions.

The '-- Got status code 404!' is correct (when missing), you shouldn't see a 500 status (post here if you see more of them).

Prey is hidden, but it is installed because you can run it & see it's logs!

If you read the log it tells you…
> ** API key is valid. Your user account is correctly set up.
Which means exactly what it says.
The device should appear in the control panel, have you logged in to https://panel.preyproject.com/login & looked in there?

If it is not shown there use the uninstaller (inside the .dmg you installed from) & reinstall - make sure you don't agree to reuse the old settings.
