Acer webcam gives a grey image

Hello,

I'm trying to troubleshoot the webcam module on my new Acer laptop.
The images that the webcam module produces is just a grey screen.

I have verified that the webcam does indeed operate correctly. I've
tested it with Acer's webcam tool and with Skype.

I have also confirmed that none of those programs are running when
running the webcam module capture when troubleshooting. The image
saved with Prey is always grey.

Now for the interesting part, about 6 months ago, I purchased another
Acer laptop - almost identical to my brand new acer. Prey runs like a
champ on that machine and spits out images with its webcam with no
problems. I've got both machines configured in the exact same way as
far as Prey is concerned.

The knowledge base doesn't go into too much detail for troubleshooting
this issue. I'm hoping there is more that can be done.

Webcam issues are common. It's my understanding that a new webcam module is
being written, but is not yet available. I suspect you'll just have to live
with the non-functioning camera until the version of prey with the updated
camera module is available.

Hey guys,

When I first read this I thought "oh, another black webcam issue", but
on second thought, here may lie a clue to help us discover what's
causing the problem. Wardhawg, how "nearly identical" are both
laptops? Are they equipped with the same webcam? If so I'd ask you to
please give us more information regarding the differences between them
(either hardware, software or drivers).

Hi!

I have an Acer Aspire One, updated Prey three times and i always get
the black screen. I know this happens to almost every aspire one.

That's strange. I have an Acer Aspire One and prey works marvelously
on it. Could it be an issue with a driver or some other program
incompatible with Prey? Good luck.

Sorry for the super long delay. I'm just now getting back into the swing of things with trying to make Prey work.

The one working laptop AcerLaptop1 is an Aspire 5741. Device manager says it is a 1.3M WebCam.

The one non working laptop is an Aspire 5742. Device manager says it is a 1.3M HD WebCam. Note the HD.

Both machines are running the same Microsoft driver dated 6/21/2006 version 6.1.7601.17514.
