I installed Prey on my PCLinux Laptop and have registered and got the
Device Key from your site and i have entered it, but where do I get
the AI Key from or How do I get it? I don't see it anywhere.

Obviousy I did look at that page as that is where I registered. It
shows my PC name and account but says "Device still unverified!". I
have looked everywhere do not see and AIP Key. It only gives me a
Device Key.

all it says on the webpage is:

Device information

* Device plan: Free
* Status: Unverified
* Device type: Portable
* Key: xxxxxxx
* Latest reports: 0

It is running on my machine, but i guess if there is no API number
there is no point to it.

To find your API key, log in to the control panel (control.preyproject.com) and click Profile at the very top of the screen.
The API key is in the right column and it should be 12 characters.

The device key is listed next to each device (if you clicked the Profile link, click Devices to go back) and should be 6 characters.

Thank you Yehuda!

It would be good if they would show that on the same page as the
Device Key. I assumed "profile" was just personal info related to my
account.

I have now entered the Device key and and API Key but it still says
"unverified".

I will check other threads for info on that.

Prey is awesome, but this issue really seems incredible.

I'm running ubuntu 11.04 and installed Prey v0.5.3, and it was quite
difficult to get to know what to! First of all, why doesn't the damn
API key change its name to profile key, user key, or whatever more
meaningful. Maybe it will help users to realize they should go check
the profile web page to get that key.

Also, it would be really nice if one could easily find out that you
have to run
sudo nano /usr/share/prey/config
to enter the keys, and then
sudo /usr/share/prey/prey.sh --check
to check how it is working.

I don't mind using the terminal .... if I know what to do!

The installer should walk you through the setup process, wasn't that the case for you? If you install with 'control panel mode' all the setup of API key & device key is done for you. Standalone expects you to understand what is required.

The API key is for accessing the Prey API, so I doubt it will get renamed.
The README is a good place to start, it will be inside the Prey folder, or you can read it on the source repository (scroll down).

hello,

i am sorry to say that for me (in austria) the installation-process is not working, too.

what happened: i registered (okay, the confirmation-email needed about 5 hours to reach me).
happy i downloaded the installer and started - but there is "no connection to the server".
using "check.bat" i see everything is "ok", but at the end there is "no api-key error 401".
i disabled antivirus and firewall, too. no difference.

there seems to be a major problem with your service :-(

If you don't like it don't use it.

It would help to know what OS, you are using where the installer is downloaded from (in case it is not an official release).
The log may help too

You say you got the confirmation email about 5 hours after registering for
an account. Did you follow the instructions in the email to confirm your
account? You might try doing that again.

hello,

of course i did that :-)
i just reset my password now just to be sure this works, too.

what i find irritiating is the difference in the setup-dialog between

- new user
- existing user

the text says to use
"new" if this is the first time you installed prey OR you still havent
created an account
"existing" if you already signed up AND wish to add this cimputer to
your account

what i did:

registering via the website
in the meantime i used the recommende "forgot password" method to
initiate a second-confirmation-email
confirming my email
downloading the software
running the setup-program

neither of these options fits for me. if i try to use "new" (which
would be correct) there comes the same error. the dialog doesnt look
fitting, i do not want to create including my name and confirm my
password twice....

Can you send a screen shot of the dialog that 'doesn't look fitting'
It is a little unclear what you mean by entering your password twice…

If you can show us the dialog it may make things clearer.

ok :-)

of course I try to use the "existing" dialog because I have a verified account...

d01: theses options are not fitting for my situation.
d02: here I should enter all my account-information again, makes no sense with my verified account
d03: this is what I use :-)

Now that is clear, thanks.
:^)
The installer seems like it is incorrectly asking for the info for a new account when it only needs the existing username & password.
Can someone else on Ubuntu 11 please verify this behavior?

It is probably the installer packaging that is at fault.

I skimmed the thread, I can't see any mention of uninstalling. The uninstaller should be in the Prey folder, inside the platform/windows folders. Reinstall & choose existing user, remove the device from the CP before you start this process.

The original poster was on Linux & you are on Windows so I don't know how the installer issues are related.

I think a few logs may help, can you post them here? Should be in c:\prey by default

The API & Device key can be saved into the 'config' text file, they are located in the prey folder too. You can set them up manually if you want. The API is listed in your account on the CP & so is the device key, maybe add a new device on the CP if you can & then use that key.

When reinstalling don't reuse the config if you get asked.
