There are a few drawbacks…
Hiding by default would make Prey more confusing to new users.
It may get Prey labeled as malware/ trojan by anti virus scanners.
Hiding Prey would also be pointless if you just set a screen lock password on your device.
Hiding Prey does nothing to protect all the other data on the phone, but a screen lock does.
A smart thief would simply use the market app & try looking through your purchase history - I can't see any way to sign out. The list of 'My Apps' would always be visible stating which ones are installed.
Personally I think users should be encouraged to lock down & protect their data on devices instead of trying to think around the problem.
