Prey reports my computer is running Tiger, when it's running Mountain Lion.
Also, how do I see (an active process somewhere, or a control panel?) that Prey is running on my Mac?

Click the configuration tab in the Control Panel & select 10.8 in the popup. It's just an indicator as far as I know.
Prey runs on a schedule so it's easiest to either use check mode or just enable missing mode & enable a report.

It's a really good idea to test it so you can see what Prey does, just stay away from the actions until you have time to deal with a locked or noisy machine (the alert).
