Havea few machines still running Inventor 2011 SP2/Win 7.. One of the machines was rebuilt in the last couple of weeks. Inventor keeps crashing when opening our assemblies. In the CER, its stating module C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor 2011\Bin\rse.dll access violation. Then the violation type is trying to read some memory address.

At first I though the issue was related to an outdated video card but updating it did not resolve the issue. The other two machines are configured the same way and they all have the same card as well. Meaning the other two can open the assemblies just fine. I also ran a repair and still no resolution Any other thoughts besides uninstalling/reinstalling>

When looking at crash reports of Inventor, a lot of times they seem to fail on certain DLLs.. For example I seen a few recent crash reports that point to the RSE.DLL file. When you look at the related "dump" file, a lot of times I see this same exception...

The exception code 0xC000005 lead me to this article but I would like to know what is really needed since it states "does not have the appropriate access", even though you go through those items in that article.

The exception code 0xC000005 is an access violation in Windows, which means that a program is trying to read or write to memory it doesn't control. In a really simplistic example, a program could query Windows for the contents of the clipboard and Windows would give back the memory location holding the contents. The program is free to read that data, but attempting to write directly to the memory would generate an access violation since Windows only granted read access and not write access. Without the source code for a program, knowing that an access violation happened really has no value beyond telling you which module caused the problem. In this case since it is a module that ships with Inventor there's nothing you can do except report the issue to Autodesk. If it happened to be in an addin which the user isn't using, you could possibly unload the addin to avoid the issue.

But the responses I always see based on these crash reports is to share the dataset.. Nothing else to try. A lot of times that is not possible to do... So user's get upset seeing the same response each and every time..

The majority of these types of issues are a combination of a particular data set and a specific workflow. We can often look at the code and have a pretty good idea as to what caused a crash, but we can't be certain that a particular code fix won't just move the crash to another location in the code. That is why we try to get reproducible cases for the crashes, so that we can verify a proposed fix actually does address the issue. We understand that some customers can't provide the data sets, but some can and that's why we ask.

the rse.dll version 26.40.49201.1 causes lots of crashes, and all you have to do is look up the logs people are sending you to confirm this.

version 26.40.49200.0 seems to work a lot better with inventor and we are starting to replace this dll since there are no updates that are addressing this.

We have several users getting this code within the last 2 weeks prior to updating Inventor to the latest patch. Error is still occurring daily. We cannot share the data set unfortunately. We have tried making sure the users have the latest graphics drivers but are still experiencing the issue. (or it crashes to desktop without error)
