In addition to a number of well-known software applications (e.g., Gmail, Google Maps, Google Search, and YouTube), GMS Apps include an application known as Network Location Provider (NLP), which helps to supply Google's location services to mobile devices. In part, NLP works in conjunction with two application programming interfaces (APIs) that are part of the Android operating system: [Note 6] the GPS Provider API, which determines a device's location using the United States government's Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites; and the Network Provider API, which determines location based both on triangulation from nearby cellular communications towers (cell towers) and on the device's detection of local wireless network access points (Wi-Fi networks). Wi-Fi refers to wireless local area networks, or WLANs, which connect users to the Internet by means of radio or infrared frequencies. These networks require the network operator to install a short-range radio tower, referred to as a wireless access point (WAP), which sends and receives data to and from user devices that are equipped with hardware capable of receiving the signal from the access point.

Wi-Fi networks may be implemented by a variety of operators and in a variety of contexts. Private residences and businesses deploy wireless networks for use in the home or office. Other businesses directly provide wireless networks in public areas such as airports, coffee shops, hotels, and convention centers. Collectively, these networks create hotspots in suburban areas and business districts, which provide wireless access to the public. Beyond hotspots, several municipalities currently offer or have begun to explore plans to provide public Wi-Fi access. (Footnotes omitted.)

Expro's industry-exclusive SKYHOOK Wireless Cement Line Make-Up Device allows operators to remotely make-up the cementing iron or hose without the need to send personnel above the rig floor. Featuring our advanced wireless automation system, the SKYHOOK Wireless Cement Line Make-Up Device not only increases safety and efficiency through remote operation, but further allows for faster cement line rig up by eliminating rig floor hydraulic umbilical lines and operating console.

Skyhook Wireless (formerly known as Quarterscope) is a Boston-based company that has developed a technology for determining geographical location using Wi-Fi as the underlying reference system. Using the MAC addresses of nearby wireless access points and proprietary algorithms, WPS can determine the position of a mobile device within 20-30 meters. It provides service similar to GPS without GPS hardware and can also integrate with GPS-enabled devices to provide hybrid positioning. With sub-second time-to-first-fix, supposed 20-30 meter accuracy and near 100% availability indoors and in dense urban areas, it is very complementary to GPS.

Skyhook wireless is well known for providing WiFi based positioning. The service is used on the iPhone, the Eye-Fi geotagging memory cards for cameras, and is available for the Windows desktop Operating Systems, OS X, Linux, Symbian, and Windows Mobile. Recently Skyhook Wireless updated the SDK to make use of cell tower and GPS location combining information from these three location technologies to give applications an incredibly large area of coverage. For Windows Mobile, the service is accessed through an unmanaged library. From reading through the Skyhook Wireless developer forums, I found that managed developers haven't been able to access 100% of the functionality. I decided to create a wrapper myself..

The WPS class has other methods that can be called. I don't detail the purpose of all of the methods here. That information can be found in the WPSAPI documentation on the Skyhook wireless site. The method names I've placed on the WPS class are not the exact same as the function names in the WPSAPI library, but they are similar, and it is not difficult to map each one of the Wps class methods to the WPSAPI functions. In the coming weeks, I will be making more detailed documentation available within the Skyhook Wireless discussion group.

Skyhook Wireless's database triangulates a location based on a combination of IP geo-location and the MAC addresses of wireless devices that can be seen, even if the networks it is triangulating the location from is not open. (MAC addresses are always unencrypted and public even when using WPA since the MAC address helps identify the access point.) If I recall correctly, they can usually triangulate to within a few hundred meters of accuracy.

Skyhook has amassed a database of 50 billion scanned records of Wi-Fi, cellular tower and GPS signals--a "map" of locations that captures 80% of the U.S. population. To collect the data Skyhook has 500 drivers on any given day cruising around with laptops and wireless antennas that read the Wi-Fi and other signals and correlate them with locations. The goal is to lay down baseline scans of roads and cities across the globe.

Skyhook also suggests that developers feel Google Checkout is a hindrance to better sales. Roughly two in five claim they'd sell more apps if the Android Market allowed for carrier billing or another system. So far, T-Mobile and Sprint have already jumped on board with carrier billing and at some point in the near future both will allow users to have apps added to their wireless bills.

Skyhook Wireless, a Boston based start-up, has announced the launch of a new WiFi based location system, which could help tracing stolen laptops and provide 911 emergency location information to VoIP providers. The new technology will use a database of some 1.5 million wireless hotspot locations to pinpoint the exact location of a WiFi-enabled device; the company claims it is accurate to 20-40 metres.
