David Carment, Editor of the Canadian Foreign Policy Journal, is pleased to announce the release of a special issue on "Making Canada Relevant Again: International Mediation in a Fragile World."

The focus of this special issue, co-edited with Guest Editor Evan Hoffman, is to highlight ways in which Canada can draw on successful examples of mediation and translate them into effective policy.

As Carment notes, "It's evident from this collection of articles, which cover everything from case studies to theory to diplomatic analysis, that Canada has great potential as a mediator on the world stage. That potential is not being properly realised by the current government. Being a good mediator in the world is not an ideological position. It makes cost-effective, political sense. By looking at our past achievements, current capacities, and by drawing on lessons from some of our European counterparts it is clear there is much more we could be achieving.

"Canada and the West are currently facing complex, new threats and challenges to our security which are not easily met through the use of force and conventional diplomacy. With the right kind of investments, Canadian mediators have the potential to effectively and efficiently address a number of these threats, notes guest editor Evan Hoffman, who directs the Canadian International Institute of Applied Negotiation in Ottawa.

"With the recent announcement that Canada's aid agency will be merged with our department of foreign affairs and international trade, the time is right for Canada to re-examine the role of mediation. Our political, development and even our trade objectives will be better realised as a result," said Carment.

Canadian Foreign Policy Journal is published by the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University and is now in its 20th year of publication.
