I'm a novice PreTeXt user, trying to get my PC set up and I've come across an issue while trying to compile to pdf. I get a fatal format error message and when I open the MikTeX console, it says there is a PATH issue. The message says "This directory is not in the search list for executables or it is at the wrong position in the list. You can fix this issue by adding the directory to the environment variable PATH. This makes it possible to invoke the MikTeX executables anywhere."

However, I have Windows 10 and I'm hesitant to change any PATH environment variables, after reading the caution given in Jessica Sklar's tutorial.

Is it safe to change this PATH environment variable? If so, exactly how do I do that?

Thanks!

Not sure about Windows 10, but I recently set up my Windows 7 machine and it was fine.

You don’t need to change the path at a command line, you can do it through the control panel. It is under advanced system settings and then environment variables. Just make sure you add to the path and not subtract anything.

Okay, that's good to know. Once I've chosen environment variables under advanced system settings, then what? I've attached a screenshot of the MikTeX console message, if that helps.

Thanks!

Sorry I meant control panel for Windows.  On Windows 10 you choose the settings gear then you can search for path and it tells you where to go, it should open system properties on the advanced tab. Choose Environment Variables and add the path for MikTex to the overall Path.
