It only shows up with 1, though. (It appears to work as expected, when I copy and paste the <ul> into a <p> in the main body of the text.) Is this a known issue with respect to <aside>?

You get fewer columns than requested when the space is too narrow.
As asides are narrow, I'd say this looks expected, and maybe nobody
ever tried it before.
