Math not rendering (reliably) in interactive exercise feedback

I've noticed that if the feedback portion of an interactive exercise contains mathematics, it does not render reliably. I wasn't able to see anything in the console that suggests why.

I noticed this too recently, but in an rst-authored multiple choice problem I wrote and used in a peer instruction assignment on Runestone. The latex didn't render in the feedback - though it did change to \(...\) instead of the rst notation I wrote it in :math:`....`. 

I thought maybe it was part of another Runestone latex-rendering issue I had reported to Brad and he will be pushing a fix for.  Seeing your examples, especially the one that is independent of Runestone, now I'm not sure it is the same issue.
